dionpraHello everyone,
I have a question and would like to rely on the community’s experience: Do the colors of IKEA KALLAX shelves remain stable over time, or do they tend to fade, especially with daily use or exposure to light?
I am planning to place a KALLAX shelf in a very sunny window spot and want to avoid the surface fading quickly or the color noticeably changing. I am particularly interested in whether the material—whether melamine or another type of surface—is durable enough and if you might already have long-term experience with it.
Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any special care tips to minimize potential color fading.
Thank you in advance for your insights and advice!

Regarding the color and material stability of KALLAX shelves: The surfaces are mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard. These are generally resistant to wear and fading.
Light-related fading can occur, but it is minimal with indoor use and normal lighting over several years.
One way to minimize this is by blocking direct UV exposure, for example with curtains or blinds. Chemical cleaning agents should be avoided due to the coating, as they might damage the surface.

One way to minimize this is by shielding from direct UV radiationI find this recommendation a bit exaggerated. If you place KALLAX near a window, there is some risk of fading. Whether that is acceptable depends on personal preference. Carpets don’t fade as much from daylight, but furniture does.
Hello everyone,
I wanted to add that the typical white KALLAX shade can gradually turn more yellow due to UV exposure, not just fade.
My tips:
1. Avoid or minimize direct, strong sunlight
2. Clean regularly with a mild detergent (e.g., a slightly damp cloth with some dish soap)
3. Do not use harsh cleaning agents or abrasive cleaners, as they could damage the coating
If the shelf is painted in color, it is more susceptible to visible changes compared to light surfaces.
In general, these materials are not designed for permanent UV exposure.
