Hello everyone, I am considering how to retrofit Ikea Hemnes furniture, such as display cabinets or sideboards, with LED lighting to make them look more modern and functional. I want to achieve both good interior illumination and a pleasant ambient lighting effect. It is important to me that the solution can be integrated into the furniture as discreetly as possible, without visible cables, and ideally equipped with a switch or even better, a sensor-based control. Does anyone have experience or useful tips on how to do this practically and with minimal effort? Which types of LEDs are suitable, how can the power supply be implemented, and what should I pay attention to regarding safety and appearance? I look forward to your answers.

For retrofitting LED lighting in Hemnes furniture, LED strips are the most practical solution. These can be easily attached inside, using double-sided tape, either at the top of shelves or within the cabinet. For power supply, a 12V power adapter with a suitable connector is recommended. It is important to pay attention to the quality of the strip: waterproof or at least splash-proof versions are beneficial, especially if glasses tend to condense moisture inside display cabinets. For the switch or control, simple inline switches can be used, or smart controllers with motion sensors or remote controls. Additionally, proper cable management is essential, for example routing cables through the back panel to avoid visible wiring. It is also important to consider the maximum load when selecting the power adapter and to calculate the total current in advance for larger installations.

I would like to add how I implemented this myself in my Hemnes display cabinet, as there were some practical challenges that I want to share here. First, I chose flexible, dimmable LED strips with 3000K warm white light because the lighting looks very harmonious with the wood. For installation, I partially removed the back panel, mounted the LED strip from the inside at the top, and routed the cables through small holes in the back panel. A motion sensor was installed near the door to automatically turn the light on. It is advantageous to test all electronic components for functionality before installation. A common issue is access to the switch or controller, so I recommend a small control panel on the outside or truly wireless control via remote. I powered the system with a small plug-in power supply, discreetly hidden behind the cabinet. How is your power connection set up? Are there sockets nearby, or are you planning a more permanent wiring solution?

Thanks for the detailed information; that sounds very helpful. I have an outlet behind the furniture that I can easily use. Therefore, a more permanent installation involving wiring inside the walls or similar is neither necessary nor desired. I find the idea of a motion sensor very appealing, as I want to control the lighting intuitively without having to constantly operate switches. Simple inline switches are rather not an option for me. I would also like to use a warm light color to complement the wood tones of the Hemnes furniture. If anyone has tips on choosing motion sensors or integrating them without visible wiring, I’d appreciate hearing them.

Great choice! I did the same, and it’s really fun! 🙂 Motion sensors with built-in shutoff timers are super practical since the light only turns on when you open the cabinet. It’s best to use one with a compact design that fits neatly behind or under the shelves. LED strips with USB connectors might also be interesting for your setup, as you can simply use a USB power adapter and don’t have to hide anything bulky.

One more tip: color-changing LEDs with remote controls add a nice touch for creating special atmospheres! Overall, have fun with your project—stuff like this really upgrades any flat-pack cabinet and instantly gives the room a cozy feel!
