ᐅ What kind of maintenance does a Billy bookcase require in environments with high humidity?

talo36Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf from IKEA that I plan to place in a room with relatively high humidity. Since I expect humidity levels to frequently fluctuate between 60 and 80 percent, I’m interested in what kind of care or treatment the Billy shelf needs to stay stable for as long as possible.
Specifically, I would like to know if I should apply any special protection to the wood or surface, and if there are particular cleaning methods recommended for high humidity environments. Any advice on preventing swelling or warping of the material would also be very helpful.
Looking forward to your experiences and professional input!

Hello talo36,
your question is very interesting and important, especially regarding Billy-style shelves made of particleboard with a melamine coating. These materials react differently to high humidity. Melamine is water-resistant, but the edges covered with plastic foil are vulnerable once water gets underneath the foil.
I would recommend first taking a closer look at the room conditions: 60-80% humidity is quite high, and there is indeed a risk of swelling at the edges of the particleboard.
Care instructions:
1. Regularly wipe with a slightly damp cloth, not wet!
2. Do not use cleaning agents that contain a lot of water or are harsh; mild soap solutions are better.
3. For additional protection, the edges can be treated with a special edge-protecting varnish, which you can find at the home improvement store.
Further care:
Sometimes professionals recommend applying a thin layer of clear varnish on the unprotected areas of the shelves, especially on the edges.
What is the temperature like, and does the humidity vary significantly? Is the shelf placed directly against an outside wall, which can be cold and damp? Such details are also very relevant for a more detailed recommendation.

That’s great that you approached the topic so thoroughly, Palenar! 🙂
@talo36: From my own experience, I can say that my Billy shelf sometimes swelled a little with humid air, but with regular wiping and a bit of distance from the wall, it was no problem at all.
And don’t forget: if possible, don’t place the shelf directly against the wall. Leave some space so air can circulate. This already helps prevent a lot of stress on the wood!
Also, feel free to put a hygrometer in the room — they are very inexpensive and help you monitor the situation. A great tip if you want your shelf to last in the long run. So, you’ve got this!

The melamine coating offers some protection against moisture but is especially vulnerable at the edges. Therefore, it is advisable to use edge sealing or edge protection paint.
Practically, this means:
- Do not place directly against cold exterior walls.
- Keep a gap between the shelf and the wall.
- Ensure good room ventilation to avoid moisture buildup.
- Clean only with a well-wrung cloth.
In the long term, using a dehumidifier or targeted ventilation is recommended to keep the relative humidity below 60%.

I understand that this is important to you because a swollen or damaged shelf can be really frustrating. I sometimes also underestimate the impact of humidity.
A tip from my experience: Try placing small felt pads under the feet of the shelf to keep it off the floor. Often, moisture seeps in from underneath, which then causes problems.
How is the ventilation in the room otherwise? Could you possibly air it out more frequently by opening windows on opposite sides? This often helps more than you might expect.

Melamine coating provides a certain level of moisture resistance, but it is especially vulnerable at the edges. That’s exactly the key point! The material itself doesn’t absorb much water, but moisture can penetrate through small gaps at the edges.
A specific note for talo36: If you decide to apply a shelf coating, it is recommended to use a waterproof acrylic paint or polyurethane (PU) finish. These coatings are significantly more resistant to moisture and prevent swelling of the chipboard.
One more tip regarding cleaning: Avoid using intensive steam cleaners! The moisture penetrates the material too quickly in that case.
