Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble several pieces of furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series myself (specifically dressers and nightstands). Usually, I only have basic tools and would like to know exactly which tools I need to make the assembly as efficient as possible and to avoid damaging the parts.

I am particularly interested in recommendations for essential hand tools for assembly, such as screwdrivers, cordless drills, etc. Also, tips on whether any special tools are required, like hex keys (Allen wrenches) in various sizes or maybe specific hammers or other aids, would be great.

From your experience, are there any favorite tools that really save time? Or perhaps tools that you would rather borrow than buy?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

For IKEA Hemnes, you mainly need a Phillips screwdriver and a hex key (usually included in the IKEA package).

A cordless drill is optional but can save a lot of time. You only need a hammer if wall plugs are used. Otherwise, the basic set of screwdrivers and clamps, if available, is sufficient.

Hello Rafael32,

I can understand your question well, as assembling Hemnes can sometimes be a bit tricky, especially if you don’t have professional basic equipment.

Basically, you will need:
- A good Phillips screwdriver (preferably with a comfortable grip and different sizes in case the screws vary)
- A cordless drill with variable speed, which significantly reduces assembly time, but use it carefully to avoid over-tightening the screws
- The Allen keys are usually included in the package, but having a set with various sizes is useful in case you need replacements
- A rubber mallet is helpful for gently fitting wooden parts together without visible damage
- If you want to secure the furniture to the wall, a spirit level and a drill for wall plugs (anchors) will be useful

I recommend making sure that your tools feel comfortable in your hands when buying or borrowing them – it really makes a difference.

If you’re unsure about any step, feel free to ask again!

Good morning, here is a structured overview that should help you with assembling the Hemnes furniture:

1. Phillips screwdriver (PH2) – standard for IKEA
2. Allen keys – usually included separately, often 4 mm or 5 mm
3. Cordless drill (with torque setting) – this makes the work much easier, especially when dealing with multiple screws
4. Rubber mallet – to gently secure wood joints
5. Spirit level – not a tool in the traditional sense, but very useful for properly aligning the furniture
6. Possibly combination pliers – to hold joints or bend small metal parts if needed

Common mistake: Simply screwing in all screws with full force. The Hemnes screws are often made of soft material, so you need to be more gentle.

My tip: Allow yourself some time and ideally work with two people, which makes many tasks easier.

That’s correct; the rubber mallet replaces a regular hammer to protect the surface.
