Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Billy shelving unit with a drawer, but the drawer keeps sticking when pulled out and doesn’t operate smoothly. The drawer is correctly installed, and the slides also seem to be properly mounted, yet it catches at several points during extension. Does anyone have experience with this or any tips on how to fix the problem? Are there typically specific clearances to consider, or is there a trick to make the drawer run more smoothly? Thanks in advance!

It’s interesting how often “correct assembly” is mentioned here, even though IKEA furniture is known to sometimes fit tightly due to slight tension. With simple constructions like the Billy shelf, it’s more of a design issue than just user error.
I would even say: Those who stay relaxed and slightly sand down the drawer will come out ahead. Otherwise, it becomes a constant struggle with the expensive designer furniture.

I would even argue that anyone who stays calm here and files down the drawer slightly will come out aheadThat sounds reasonable; you don’t want to struggle every time you open a drawer.
But where is it most effective to file? At the underside of the drawer or rather on the side that’s likely catching on the runner?
I also received a tip to hang the drawers slightly higher at the front to prevent them from jamming. Does anyone have experience with this?

For me, adjusting the drawer slides helped a lot – these click hinges often have small adjustment screws that allow you to change the distance to the track. It was a bit of a challenge, but after that everything worked more smoothly. Hopefully, this encourages you to take a closer look here as well. 🙂
