Hello everyone, I have several Ikea Pax wardrobes at home and am looking for ways to make them childproof. The goal is to secure the wardrobes so that young children cannot access contents that are dangerous or unsuitable for them, while at the same time not compromising the stability and functionality of the wardrobes. I’m interested in practical, proven solutions you know of—sliding locks, internal latches, special child safety devices, or other modifications. Are there also experiences with safely anchoring them to prevent tipping? Which products or methods have proven particularly effective in practice? Thanks in advance for your tips and recommendations!

Hello oleksiibi, I find your question very clearly formulated, which makes the discussion easier. For securing Ikea PAX wardrobes against child access, I recommend the following approaches: - Use childproof locks or latches that are hardly visible from the outside to prevent access. - Attach the wardrobes to the wall using Ikea-specific safety sets to prevent tipping, which is especially important with small children. - Additionally, magnetic or adhesive locks can be installed on the inside of the doors, which only adults can easily open. It is important to combine several measures, as simply locking the doors is often not enough. If applicable, handles should also be checked for climbing risks. Which model and how frequently do you use your PAX wardrobes? This can influence the choice of safety devices.

Thank you for the detailed reply! I have two wardrobes: a large one with sliding doors and a smaller one with traditional hinged doors and handles. The sliding door wardrobe is mainly used for clothing, while the other is for toys and other items that aren’t necessarily suitable for young children. Both wardrobes are used daily, so they need to be easy for adults to open. Therefore, a lock that looks complicated is not ideal. Stability is also important to me, as my children might try to climb on them.

For hinged doors, a simple child safety latch installed on the inside of the door is usually sufficient. For sliding doors, magnetic locks are a good solution because they are discreet while still making the doors childproof. Don’t forget the wall anchors!

Hi oleksiibi! For my PAX wardrobe with sliding doors, I installed adhesive magnetic locks—really convenient because they don’t alter the outside of the doors. I also secured the wardrobes to the wall using the included wall anchors, so I was confident nothing would tip over. I find it very reassuring that this way you can prevent little ones from pulling things out of the wardrobes! It’s great when safety and everyday practicality can be combined 😊

I completely understand your concern, oleksiibi. You want to protect your children without having to constantly “monitor” them or worry all the time. At first, I also worried that the safety devices might be too cumbersome, but my experience is that you quickly get used to them, and over time, children no longer have any chance to get inside. Of course, there were moments when my little whirlwind still managed to open something despite everything—but the combination of wall anchors and childproof locks has proven to be very reliable. I can definitely confirm the tip about using magnetic catches.
