Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a Billy bookshelf with glass doors and, of course, I am aiming for a solution that is as durable and secure as possible. However, I wonder what common issues might arise with the glass doors on Billy bookshelves. For example, are there any known difficulties during installation, potential damage to the glass panels, or problems related to durability and maintenance? I am also curious if the glass tends to scratch easily or if the hardware often requires readjustment. Details like these would be very helpful for me to better assess whether it’s worth it or if I should consider an alternative option.

Thank you in advance for your insights and experiences!

Typical issues often include door hinges that are difficult to adjust and glass that may easily crack if installed incorrectly. Additionally, dust on glass surfaces becomes noticeable quite quickly, requiring regular cleaning.

In addition to the points mentioned, I would like to note that the BILLY glass fronts are made of safety glass, which significantly reduces the risk of embrittlement. However, the fittings can sometimes be sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuations, which may lead to the need for increased adjustments. The plastic coating’s plasticizers can sometimes dissolve if not properly maintained with suitable cleaning agents, causing the surface to become dull. It is also important during installation to ensure that the drilled holes fit precisely to avoid any stress in the glass that could lead to hairline cracks.

I can understand well how uncertain you might feel about glass fronts—especially if you have no experience with them. I felt the same way when I bought my first BILLY with glass.

I found that worrying too. A small dent on the edge during assembly also concerned me, and I was afraid it might eventually crack there. But luckily, there are special protective strips that allow you to secure the glass panels more firmly—just make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions!

Fittings don’t tolerate moisture very well.

I can confirm that; in my case, it led to creaking doors when I hadn’t maintained the seals for a long time. Since then, I clean the metal parts regularly, and that has helped.

The mechanical stresses acting on glass fronts are particularly interesting. Many users report tension caused by overloading the shelves, especially when heavy objects are placed directly against the glass fronts.

This is an important question because glass fronts are not actually as durable as solid wood or MDF doors. I often question whether the glass version really meets the technical requirements or if it is more of a design solution that compromises stability.

I agree with the point about adjustments. After a few months of use, the hinges wear out to the point where you have to tighten or fine-tune them more often. However, this is generally not unusual for Ikea products, so it’s not surprising. I would really be interested to know how often you have experienced such problems.

I think the BILLY with glass doors is simply brilliant! 🙂 Of course, it requires some care and the assembly needs to be done properly, but the result is a really stylish piece of furniture that really enhances your room.

So far, I haven’t had any problems with the glass, and the hinges are holding up great. I believe it’s important to handle the doors very gently, and then everything works perfectly. Also, if you securely attach the shelving unit to the wall, nothing will wobble or cause any issues.

So don’t be put off by potential problems – pay close attention to how you assemble it, and you’ll enjoy it for a long time!
