Hello everyone, I have the following problem: My IKEA Malm dresser has developed an annoying squeaking noise in several drawers when closing. The noise mainly occurs when I slowly push the drawers back and the sliding rails along the sides glide. I have already cleaned the rails, but the squeaking remains. My suspicion is that it comes from the rollers or the sliding rails, and maybe they need lubrication or a minor repair. Does anyone have experience with this issue and possibly a step-by-step guide on how to fix it quietly without having to buy a new drawer or rail? Thanks in advance!
Hello Bunidra, I am very familiar with your problem. The squeaking in IKEA Malm drawers often comes from a lack of lubrication or dirt in the runners. First, I would recommend removing the drawer completely, as this makes it easier to access the runners. It is important not only to clean the visible parts but also the inside of the runners and the rollers – dust or small particles often accumulate here.
Afterwards, it is advisable to use a silicone-based lubricant that does not attract dust. WD-40 can provide temporary relief, but it is often not a long-term solution because it evaporates and attracts dust. If you can check the rollers: see if they turn freely or if they are broken or damaged. In that case, replacement is usually the only option.
One more question for you: Does the squeaking occur in all drawers or only in certain ones? This could help narrow down the cause.

Otherwise, using a silicone-based lubricant is recommended. Thank you for the detailed answer! I haven’t tried the silicone spray yet, but I will. To your question: The squeaking first appeared only on the middle drawer, but now it’s almost all of them. It’s worst on the top drawer.
Tomorrow I’ll take the drawers out and examine the rollers more closely. I’m just wondering if disassembling the slides is complicated or if IKEA has an easy solution for that?

As an addition: Make sure to fully extend the drawer and carefully detach the runners from the side of the dresser – they are often simply hooked in or fixed with small screws. This way, you can clean all parts thoroughly. Avoid using oils, as they attract dust and can cause problems over time. Silicone spray is the best choice here because it is water-repellent and non-sticky. If the rollers are damaged or deformed, they should be replaced to prevent the squeaking from returning.
I always find it somewhat paradoxical how we constantly ask for lubrication, while some people believe furniture should operate quietly over time without all this gluing. Why don’t we simply rely on more durable materials or better construction? But well, for now, we probably have to stick with sprays and such.
That sounds almost too simple to be true, doesn’t it? 🙂 Still, sometimes the simplest solution is the best.
