TiagobenHello everyone, I am currently planning my kitchen using IKEA Metod kitchen units and want to focus on ergonomic design. My main question is: How can I build IKEA Metod kitchen units in the most ergonomic and effective way so that working in the kitchen is not only functional but also back-friendly and comfortable?
I have already measured my kitchen space and my height and understand the basics such as the optimal working height, but I would like more detailed advice on cabinet layout, the best use of different storage options, built-in appliances, and tips for organizing the kitchen workflow.
Additionally, I am interested in which adjustments during installation should definitely be considered to avoid strain or incorrect posture later on.
I look forward to many suggestions and tips, including personal experiences with the Metod units! Thanks in advance.

Hello Tiagoben, thank you for the very well-formulated and detailed question!
In my opinion, ergonomics for IKEA Metod kitchen units starts primarily with planning the correct worktop height. Ideally, this should be between 91 and 96 cm (36 and 38 inches), depending on body type. With Metod, you can easily adjust this by selecting the right legs and plinth height – don’t forget to include the countertop thickness in your calculations!
For the layout, I recommend the classic work triangle: place the sink, stove, and refrigerator so that these points are within convenient reach but without feeling cramped. The Metod cabinets are quite flexible, so you can combine tall cabinets and base units in various ways.
For storage, a combination of drawers with soft-close features and optimal internal organization, such as adjustable dividers, works well. Take your time especially with the cutlery drawer to plan the internal layout perfectly.
An important technical note for installation: make sure the Metod cabinets are absolutely level and precisely plumb when aligning. Even slight diagonal misalignments can cause problems later when installing appliance panels and doors.
Do you already have measurements or floor plans? Then I can offer more targeted advice specific to your space.
This is really a key aspect that many people underestimate.

Hey Tiagoben, great topic! 😃👍 If you really want to design IKEA Metod kitchen units ergonomically, I can only recommend being patient with the planning and reviewing every step carefully. I put together a kitchen with Metod myself and here are a few tips based on my experience:
- Make sure to choose a countertop height that is comfortable so you don’t have to constantly bend down or stand on tiptoes.
- Use pull-out cabinets to make access easier, especially for pots and pans; this really helps reduce back strain.
- Think about whether you really need tall cabinets or if having lower units for better sightlines and more freedom of movement is better.
At first, I was skeptical about whether the IKEA Metod system might be too rigid, but the modularity is excellent. You can customize a lot to your own needs if you first get clear on how you work in the kitchen. So: stick with it, it will turn out great! 😄
Exactly, the details make the difference! Interior organizers really change how well you can stay organized in the long run.

Beim Stauraum bewährt sich eine Kombination aus Auszügen mit Soft-Close-Funktion und optimalen Einteilungen, z.B. verstellbare Trennwände.

Hello Tiagoben, I would like to add that when designing an ergonomic kitchen with IKEA Metod, the following points are especially important:
- The correct working height should be based on your body height. A common rule of thumb is to set the countertop height at about elbow height minus 10–15 cm (4–6 inches).
- Pay attention to an ergonomic layout of the main zones (cooling, preparation, cooking, washing), arranged logically close to each other.
- Avoid unnecessary bending and stretching: frequently used items should be stored in easily accessible pull-out cabinets, not in high cupboards.
- With Metod, the doors and drawers are very easy to open, and the soft-close feature makes daily use smoother and protects the furniture.
I agree! The flexibility is really good, and you can also combine individual elements—such as different built-in appliances or custom solutions.
Assembly is also manageable with some care. One tip: before installation, you should definitely assemble the kitchen units temporarily on a level surface. This way, you can better judge if all modules fit together as planned.
If you like, I can also share some examples from my own kitchen projects with Metod that are particularly ergonomic.

Good morning! 😀
In my opinion, one thing you shouldn’t forget when planning IKEA Metod kitchen units is to have fun with it! A kitchen is not just a functional space, but also the heart of a home.
Here are a few casual but important tips from my perspective:
- Plan for a few extra centimeters (inches) of space between the sink, stove, and work surfaces. This allows you to move freely without feeling cramped.
- Use smart solutions: corner cabinets with rotating shelves or magic corners are great for making ergonomic use of dead corners.
- Keep your personal favorites close! For example, spices and cooking utensils should be stored in easily accessible drawers near the stove.
- And please, invest in good lighting — work surfaces need to be well illuminated, which greatly contributes to a pleasant atmosphere.
I wish you a lot of enjoyment planning and slowly seeing your new kitchen come together!
