Hello everyone, I am about to start a project to securely mount IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on drywall and would appreciate some expert advice. The walls are entirely made of standard 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) drywall panels on metal or wooden studs. The Metod units are quite heavy, especially when fully loaded, and the load from the countertop and wall cabinets should not be underestimated.

My question is: Which fasteners and installation methods are recommended for safely mounting Metod kitchen units on drywall to prevent bending or screw pull-out? Are there effective reinforcements or special anchors that work better in this case? And is it better to attach directly to the studs or just to the drywall panels?

Thanks in advance for any tips and experience!

I can understand why this question is on your mind. At first glance, drywall doesn’t seem ideal for supporting such heavy furniture, which can be unsettling. A little anecdote: I once tried to install wall cabinets using only plastic anchors, and it didn’t work out. It only became secure after adding a plywood board fixed behind the drywall. Maybe that could be an option for you as well? This way, you have a solid mounting board behind the drywall that can carry the load. By the way, time often brings more confidence during your renovation, so stay calm!

Mounting directly into studs is mandatory. If you only have drywall, use metal heavy-duty anchors and distribute the load. I always mount Metod furniture with at least three points per piece.

Drywall alone cannot securely hold kitchen cabinets long-term. Be sure to reinforce behind the panel or use anchors such as Molly bolts. Screwing into wooden studs provides the best stability.

That sounds like a very good idea, thanks! I’m considering screwing a plywood board onto the studs and then attaching the drywall with suitable anchors/rods set off from it, so the kitchen units can be securely mounted later. Has anyone had personal experience with this? Is the effort reasonable? I assume this also allows more flexible placement of the mounting points.
