Hello everyone, my question is: Is there a way to equip an IKEA Besta shelf unit with casters so that it can be used as a mobile cabinet?

I want to make the Besta more flexible for my office and be able to move it without having to take the entire unit apart or buy a new piece of furniture. Obviously, IKEA doesn’t offer the Besta series with casters directly, but maybe there are suitable casters or adapters that can be used, possibly with some DIY skills.

Who has experience with whether this works stably and practically? Are there specific dimensions or weight considerations to keep in mind? I would appreciate any tips, recommendations, or even instructions that could help me with this project.

Hello ganau40,

In principle, it is possible to equip IKEA Besta shelves with casters to create a rolling cabinet. However, there are some technical details to consider to ensure the setup is stable and safe.

- Finding casters: Most IKEA furniture casters have specified maximum load capacities. Besta shelves can be loaded up to 40–50 kg (90–110 lbs) per unit, depending on the version. So, when looking for casters, make sure they have a load capacity of at least 50 kg (110 lbs) per caster, ideally more if you plan to move entire shelving units.

- Attachment: The bottom of the Besta is usually made of wood or wood-based panels. Screws into this material should be reinforced with dowels or brackets to securely hold the casters. One possible solution is using angled metal brackets or an additional base plate onto which the casters can be mounted.

- Size of casters: Besta shelves typically have only a few centimeters of ground clearance, so you should choose casters that are not too tall; otherwise, the furniture may tip easily or drawers may not operate properly.

- Stability issues: When moving the Besta shelf over longer distances, stability can be compromised. One way to counter this is by installing locking casters and securing the furniture while stationary.

Could you provide some information about the size and intended use? For example, whether it is a single shelf or multiple modules you want to move? This will help to suggest the right type of casters and attachment system.

Most IKEA furniture casters are rated for maximum loads. Besta shelves can support up to 40-50 kg (88-110 lbs) per unit, depending on the model.

I would like to add that it is advisable to use casters with a locking brake that can carry the full weight of the entire structure. Safety is especially important in an office environment.

Alternatively, you could consider whether mounting casters with fixing plates are more suitable than simple stem casters – the mounting plates usually provide a more stable connection to a wooden panel.

I also recommend reinforcing the underside of the Besta module base with solid wood battens to better distribute the screw load and prevent warping.

Simply buy furniture casters with a mounting plate and attach them to the underside of the Besta unit using appropriate screws. Make sure to check the maximum load capacity. Done.

I think this topic is often approached too simplistically. Besta is not designed for casters – while it is technically possible, the question is whether it makes sense and is safe in the long run.

- Casters can compromise stability, especially when multiple modules are connected.
- The weight can place unusual stress on the screw connections at the bottom.
- On uneven floors, casters can increase the risk of tipping.

If you really want mobility, a purpose-built rolling cabinet might not only be more practical but also better from an ergonomic and safety perspective.

Otherwise, you need to carefully consider which type of casters, fastenings, and additional reinforcements are necessary. Does anyone have long-term experience with converting Besta units with casters?

Hello everyone,

I completed the same project some time ago and can share a few tips:

1. Choice of casters: I used double ball-bearing furniture casters with a load capacity of 60 kg (132 lbs) per caster. The mounting plate was important because I screwed it to an additional MDF board, which I attached underneath the Besta base. This helped distribute the pressure more evenly.

2. Preparation: Before installing the casters, I screwed a 12mm (0.5 inch) thick MDF board to the underside of the Besta. This provided extra stability and prevented warping.

3. Fastening: Use screws of sufficient length, and avoid placing them too close to the edge to prevent damaging the material.

4. Brakes: I selected two of the four casters with locking brakes to be able to secure the entire piece of furniture when needed.

5. Weight limit: The shelf is fully loaded with folders and weighs about 40 kg (88 lbs) – with the casters, it is still easy to move and stable.

Summary: Yes, it works. With the right choice of casters, reinforcement of the bottom panel, and careful installation, you get a very stable and mobile Besta rolling unit.
