Hello everyone, I have a problem and hope for some helpful advice: my Malm bed from Ikea squeaks and creaks quite loudly when moving or sitting on it. Since I often wake up during the night, the noises bother not only me but also my partner. I have already tried tightening the screws, but that didn’t really help. Could it be due to the construction, or are there proven methods to make the bed quieter? Maybe some people have experience with Malm beds or similar models and can share how they dealt with this? I appreciate any suggestions on how to permanently reduce these annoying noises—whether through materials, techniques, or simple tricks. Thanks in advance!

A common issue with Malm beds, especially due to their construction from particleboard, is stress at the connection points, which causes noises. My advice is not only to tighten the screws firmly but also to relieve the entire structure by placing felt or silicone pads at the contact surfaces. This reduces friction. If possible, you can also apply a special lubricant such as PTFE spray to the joints or screw connections to minimize creaking.

Minor unevenness, for example around the feet area, can be well compensated with felt furniture sliders to prevent additional pressure. These measures significantly reduced the noises for me. It is important to identify the exact points where the noise occurs—so when lying down, check various spots carefully.

Exactly! And a small addition from me: It doesn’t always have to be a big screwing session. One night, I actually celebrated a pair of furniture glides as personal heroes because I finally stopped being woken up. 🙂

Also, I think moisture can play a role with wooden furniture. If the room is very dry, the wood can “move” and cause noises. A humidifier can sometimes work wonders here, without immediately having to reach for the toolbox.

By the way, if you assembled someone else’s bed: sometimes small adjustments, like the order of assembly, can make a big difference. Just loosen the screws, insert felt pads, and carefully tighten again. And maybe roughen the areas where wood rubs against wood with a piece of sandpaper beforehand. 🙂

Good luck!

For additional information: I had a similar issue with a Malm bed and resolved it systematically by doing the following:

1. Loosen all screws and clean the connection points with a dry cloth, especially the threads, to remove any wood shavings or debris.

2. Then, apply thread-locking fluid to all screws to prevent them from gradually loosening. There are also thread-locking pastes available depending on what you have access to.

3. Insert thin layers of felt or silicone protective tape at all wood-to-plastic or wood-to-metal contact points.

4. Tighten the screws evenly using a torque wrench, but not too tightly; excessive tension often causes cracks or additional noises.

5. To ensure there is no movement in the wooden panels, I dusted the connection points with a very fine lubricant such as graphite powder (not oily), which reduces friction noise.

If you follow these steps, there is a good chance the noises will almost completely disappear. A systematic approach is important to avoid repeating steps or overlooking mistakes.
