gireo33Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to best use the Ikea Besta system as storage in the hallway. I’m not only concerned with pure functionality but also with maximizing space efficiency and design, so that it is practical yet visually appealing. Does anyone have experience with the best way to arrange the Besta to avoid overcrowding the hallway while still providing enough storage for items like shoes, coats, bags, and other everyday belongings? Are there specific combinations or additions you would recommend, or clear advice on which components to avoid? I look forward to your tips and opinions!
The Besta system is very versatile in the hallway, especially because it comes in different heights and depths. For hallways, I usually recommend the narrow model, about 40 cm deep (15.7 inches), so it doesn’t take up too much space. It’s important to organize the storage based on its use: closed compartments at the bottom for shoes, middle drawers for small items like keys or gloves, and possibly open or door-covered sections at the top for coat hooks or decorations. When combining units, you can also choose sideboards with doors to create a tidy appearance. A small tip: you can top the Besta units with a wooden or stone shelf to provide a stable surface for keys or decorative items. This immediately adds a more premium look.
I really like blapau’s suggestion! I think it works well to complement the Besta system with baskets or boxes, especially at the bottom, so shoes can be stored without everything being left out in the open. This keeps things organized and prevents the hallway from looking cluttered. The height is also important: if you have shelf space above for decorations or practical items, the whole setup looks more like a piece of furniture rather than just storage. Maybe add a nice lamp above it – that really makes the space cozy! 😉
An important aspect for the optimal use of the Besta system in the hallway is considering everyday needs. You should think about what you want to store there and how often you access each item. Closed compartments or baskets are ideal for shoes to keep the area tidy. Coats can be hung on hooks or a clothing rod next to the Besta, as the system itself is less suited for this. Adding a mirror panel can also be useful for a quick check before heading outside. The choice of surface finish (white, wood look, etc.) also affects the overall appearance of the hallway. It always helps me to measure the hallway carefully before purchasing to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
To bring the hallway to life with Ikea Besta, I like to use a playful mix of open and closed elements. This way, storage space is available where needed, while also creating an airy feel, which is especially valuable in narrow hallways. You could combine slim shelves with drawers alongside open compartments for decorative storage baskets. And honestly, a few plants or a stylish lamp instantly make the space feel more inviting. After all, it’s also about pleasing the eye! 😄
