kareoHello everyone, I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA at home and would like to customize their color to make them more personal and better integrated into my room design. My question is: What are the best options for coloring BILLY shelves in an attractive and sustainable way without negatively affecting their stability or material? I have considered paint, films, or creative solutions like covered back panels, but I am unsure which option is the most durable, long-lasting, and visually appealing. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I think it’s important to keep in mind that BILLY shelves are basically made from MDF or particleboard with a laminate coating. Paint or laminate can peel off quickly or may not last very long, especially at the edges.
Could you also explain how you protect the shelves from moisture and wear?
Also: wouldn’t it be better to use removable and reversible methods, like swapping back panels or using creative shelf inserts, to change the style without making permanent alterations?

I would recommend painting BILLY shelves with chalk paint.

wouldn't it be better to use removable and reversible methods I totally agree! 🙂I once tucked fabric behind the back panel – it looks great and isn’t permanent. Colored tape strips or small decorative items are also really easy to apply and remove when you want a change.
And hey, a bit of color, but not too much – the BILLY has its charm after all. 😉
Good morning,
to give you a comprehensive answer: BILLY shelves, as mentioned, are made of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface. The material is not very resistant to strong changes in moisture levels. If you want to paint it, I recommend lightly sanding the surface first with fine sandpaper (220 grit) to help the paint adhere better.
For paint selection, acrylic or chalk paint is ideal. After that, I suggest applying a clear protective finish (polyurethane or acrylic varnish), since otherwise the shelf will be quite prone to wear.
Alternatively, adhesive films are practical – just make sure to apply them bubble-free, preferably at room temperature.
A particularly clever idea is to replace the back panel or cover it with wallpaper or fabric. This is reversible and allows you to change the look easily whenever you want.
If you plan to permanently change the color of the shelf: Are you sure you want to completely alter the classic BILLY look? This can affect the resale value and the overall style concept of your room.
I’m curious about your exact plans—could you share a bit more about your room situation?
