Hello everyone, I hope someone here can help me. I am currently planning to purchase an Ikea Platsa system for my living room and came across the question of whether there are Platsa models that already come with built-in power outlets. My goal is to avoid having to hide external power strips behind the furniture and instead have an integrated solution that is neat and functional. Does anyone know if Ikea offers Platsa modules with integrated outlets, or if power outlets always need to be installed separately? Are there alternative solutions, either within Ikea or from other sources? I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences, knowledge, or tips on this. Thank you in advance!

Hey Aysekau! Great question, one I’ve also wondered about when looking at the Platsa system 😄. Unfortunately, Ikea currently does not offer Platsa modules with built-in power outlets. The system is really flexible and modular, but you need to get the outlets separately and then cleverly install them yourself or place them behind the furniture. One tip: some people use those slim, flat power strips and put them at the back or even inside the compartments. That way, the outlet is basically hidden but still right on the unit. What helps me personally is using cable clips and cable channels to keep things organized. So, no built-in solution, but with a bit of DIY flair, it’s definitely doable! 🍀

No Platsa models with built-in sockets. Purchase power strips separately and install them flexibly.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into the topic: The Ikea Platsa series is primarily a modular furniture system that does not include built-in electrical connections. The standard modules consist solely of furniture components such as frames, shelves, and doors. Electrical outlet modules are not provided by the manufacturer because integrating electrical components involves specific safety requirements and standards.

If you are looking for a solution that includes outlets directly within the furniture structure, you can consider so-called power bars or power strips that are specially designed for furniture use. These are available from third-party suppliers and come with varying numbers of outlets as well as USB ports, which can be integrated into shelves or desktop surfaces, for example. However, these still require a nearby wall outlet or a permanent electrical installation.

If you’d like, feel free to share more about the intended placement and use, and I can offer specific advice on how to safely install electrical components flush behind or within furniture. Hiring a licensed electrician for a permanently installed solution with outlets built into the furniture wall is also an option, although this will usually involve additional costs depending on the complexity.

Thank you for the quick responses! @Nathanaelk, thank you for the detailed information, it’s very helpful. To answer your question: The Platsa is intended to serve as a media wall for the TV and a few electronic devices in the living room. There is already a wall outlet there, but it is inconveniently positioned, so an alternative or extended solution would be good.

I want to keep the cable clutter to a minimum, which is why the idea of an integrated outlet was especially appealing. I am now considering whether an external power strip for furniture, which I would hide inside a cabinet compartment, is the best solution, or if I should hire an electrician to install outlets directly in the wall behind the furniture or perhaps even inside the furniture itself.

What about the dimensions and safety of such DIY solutions with power strips inside furniture? Are there any risks I should be aware of?

For safety reasons: power strips inside furniture are generally allowed as long as there is adequate air circulation and no overheating occurs. Make sure the power strip is not completely enclosed but has some space for cooling.

If you plan to install a fixed outlet in the wall behind the furniture, this should definitely be done by a professional. Otherwise, short circuits or even fire hazards may result.

Regarding dimensions: power bars are usually flat and fit well into a shelf compartment. Built-in outlet units come in various sizes but are quite complex to install. A combination of an external power strip and cable management is often the more practical solution.
