I am currently planning to create a custom wardrobe wall using the Ikea Pax system and want to consider as many details as possible to ensure the result perfectly meets my needs. My challenge is to optimally combine the different modules and interior fittings, providing storage space for both clothing and larger items, while adapting the wardrobe wall to an irregular room shape.

Can anyone offer tips on the best approach to planning this? What should I particularly keep in mind when selecting interior fittings such as drawers, shelves, and rods? Are there any recommendations for planning dimensions and door types to achieve the best balance between functionality and appearance?

Additionally, I am interested in any helpful tools or strategies that could assist with the design process and how much flexibility I actually have with measurements if the room is not exactly rectangular.

Your question is very well thought out, and I’m happy to help with a structured approach.

First, you should measure the room precisely – including niches, sloped ceilings, or unusual corners. Also measure the ceiling height carefully, as well as any radiators or light switches. An accurate floor plan is extremely helpful for the planning process.

Afterward, it’s advisable to use the PAX planning software from Ikea. It allows you to set dimensions and modules virtually and see directly how doors and interior fittings work together. I recommend starting by planning the basic structure with cabinets that cover the main needs, such as hanging rods for long coats or large shelves for boxes.

When planning the interior fittings, consider the following:
- Drawers for small items like socks or accessories
- Shelves for folded clothes or shoes
- Pull-out trouser hangers or tie racks for better organization

It’s important to choose doors according to how the room will be used: sliding doors save space but cost a bit more, while hinged or folding doors offer more flexible combinations. Color choice and handles also play a big role in the overall look.

Small measurement errors when purchasing end up causing a lot of work, so it’s better to measure twice. Ikea’s modular system offers some flexibility, even if the room isn’t perfectly regular: you can cover gaps with filler panels or use flexible corner solutions with PAX parts.

In summary:
- Precise room measurement
- Ideally 3D planning with the PAX tool
- Planning interior fittings based on usage
- Choosing door types according to space and function
- Working flexibly with filler panels and additions at the end

If you like, I can also share some common pitfalls in PAX planning so you can avoid them from the start.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer; it really helps me a lot! The advice on precise room measurements and using planning software especially sounds very sensible.

May I ask how you find the ideal balance between drawers and shelves? For me, the question is whether I should go for many smaller drawers or more open compartments for flexibility.

I am also interested in your opinion regarding color and surface finishes in relation to different room lighting conditions. I have a rather dark room and am considering choosing light-colored fronts to brighten up the overall appearance.

Which type of door would you recommend if the room offers only limited movement space in front of the wardrobe? Sliding doors seem very practical to me, but I’m unsure about the more complicated installation.

Wow, this sounds like a really exciting project! 🙂 I built a PAX wardrobe system myself and can only say: go for it, there are so many possibilities!

For me, drawers were an absolute must, especially for small items. When you have lots of accessories, they’re incredibly practical. Open shelves worked great for larger, bulky items as well as decorations.

Regarding color choice: in darker rooms, I also find white or light-colored fronts ideal because they reflect light nicely and make the space feel much more welcoming.

Sliding doors are brilliant when space is limited! Sure, installation can be tricky, but with good instructions and patience, it works out. And in everyday life, they really save space and hassle. If you need some help, just get in touch – this kind of project is really fun! 🙂
