Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Malm desk and want to protect it as well as possible from damage. Specifically, I’m interested in simple and effective ways to prevent scratches, dents, and discoloration on the surface. I’m thinking both about protection through care products and preventive measures like covers or proper handling.
My question to you is: How can I protect Malm furniture from damage without affecting its appearance? Are there any specific products to look out for? And what should be avoided based on experience?
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello,
I always use a transparent desk protector film on my Malm desk, which can be easily cut to size. It provides excellent protection against scratches without compromising the attractive appearance.
Additionally, I place felt pads under all the device feet. In my experience, this has been very effective in keeping the desk looking like new for a long time.
And very importantly: don’t forget to wipe it regularly with a damp cloth, otherwise dust and small particles can accumulate and cause scratches. 🙂

It offers great scratch protection without losing the beautiful look.I agree with this, but I would watch out for the long-term sticky residue on the back of the film. Not every film can be removed without leaving traces, which can be problematic with Malm’s coating.
Therefore: it’s better to research beforehand which films are friendly to the brand’s surface.
One more question for kokura: Is the desk ever used with hot cups? Because heat alone can damage the surface.

Is it common to work with hot cups? Because heat alone can damage the surface here.Thank you for the warning, that is definitely relevant. I regularly drink coffee while working, so I can imagine that prolonged heat exposure could cause damage.
Apart from that, my desk is a standard work surface. It doesn’t usually have very heavy or sharp-edged objects moved across it, but sometimes notebooks, a laptop, and a keyboard.
The idea of using a transparent protective film sounds good, but I would prefer one that leaves no residue when removed or replaced.
Are there any recommendations for such films that are also heat-resistant? And what is generally advised regarding coasters for hot cups on this type of furniture?

And what is the general advice regarding coasters for hot cups with this type of furniture? For heat-resistant films, I recommend films with a PTFE coating or special heat-resistant plastics, which are often used in industrial protective films. However, these are not always easy to find in general retail or furniture stores but are more commonly available through specialized suppliers.
Regarding hot cups, I strongly advise always using coasters. The best options are made of cork or silicone, as these materials do not transfer heat to the surface.
Such coasters also prevent moisture damage caused by condensation or spills. Although Malm resin surfaces are relatively resistant, prevention is worthwhile to avoid discoloration or swelling of the material.
I’m happy to provide some sourcing options if you’re interested.
