Hello everyone, I’m currently working on repairs for Ikea Besta furniture and wondering which screw sets are particularly useful for this purpose. I’m especially interested in sets that offer easy handling while including the right types and lengths of screws for the typical connectors and MDF panels. Are there any recommendations regarding quality, range, or specific types that have proven reliable? I’d also like to know if you use sets that are compatible with the original Ikea screws, or if it’s better to stick with the original parts separately. Thanks for your insights!

I use a set of M4 socket head cap screws and the corresponding Allen keys. With these, you can attach or repair almost anything on the BESTA. It is important that the screws are not too long, as this can cause the wood to split.

The question is very understandable, as repairs on furniture like BESTA can often be frustrating when the right screws are missing. I often felt like I had chosen the wrong screw set. A set with many different lengths has helped me a lot, especially when individual connection points have varying depths. It is important to me not to have to go to the hardware store every time.

Regarding screw sets for Ikea BESTA, I can share some practical experience. BESTA furniture often uses cam locks and cam connectors, which are usually fastened with M4 pan head screws or long-thread screws. Recommended sets include these screws in various lengths, plus hex keys (Allen keys) or Torx keys, and feature clear organization.

- Ideally, sets should include at least M4 and M5 screws
- Lengths between 12 and 40 mm (0.5 and 1.6 inches) are practical
- Wood screws with coarse threads for MDF
- Stainless steel versions increase durability

I have also had good experiences with sets that come with bags or compartments for organized storage. For those looking to supplement original Ikea fasteners, these sets often offer suitable alternatives. Feel free to ask if you want specific recommendations for sets.

The best advice for screw sets at BESTA is to choose universal sets with hexagon socket screws and coarse-thread wood screws. Wood and particle boards require coarse threads to prevent stripping. A good fit of the tools is also important, as Ikea mostly uses hexagon socket or Torx screws. Cheap sets can cause problems here because the bits wear out too quickly.

I recommend a set that offers multiple sizes and specifically includes a 4 mm (5/32 inch) internal hex key. This allows for ideal operation of the cam locks used in BESTA. Screws should be short, usually 15-25 mm (5/8 - 1 inch) is sufficient.
