Hello everyone, I am currently planning to optimize the lighting in my Ikea Metod kitchen and have a few questions. On one hand, I want to ensure there is enough task lighting to properly illuminate the work surfaces, and on the other hand, the lighting should also create a pleasant atmosphere and be flexibly controllable. I am interested in which types of light fixtures work best (LED strips, spotlights, under-cabinet lights, etc.), how to position them most effectively, and if there are any tips for organizing the electrical wiring in an Ikea Metod kitchen without too much DIY work. Do you have experience with integrating dimmers or smart switches, and any specific recommendations regarding color temperature? I look forward to constructive and practical advice—feel free to share real-life examples!

LED under-cabinet lights are ideal for work surfaces, preferably dimmable and with neutral white light (around 4000K). Position them to avoid casting shadows while working.

The lighting in the Metod system can be easily upgraded. I use flexible LED strips under the wall cabinets and in the evening I dim the whole setup to a pleasantly warm light. This creates a great atmosphere while still providing excellent task lighting. With smart plugs and app control, it almost turns into a kitchen party 😉

I would like to question the unconditional recommendation of LED strips: they are inexpensive and flexible, but often provide only diffuse light and can cast shadows if not positioned carefully. For targeted task lighting, spotlights are more advantageous. Does anyone here have concrete experience with combining both systems? Is the additional investment in spotlights worth it compared to simple strips?

Thanks for your initial tips! @Josefane, you raise an important point – I’m also unsure whether LED strips alone will be enough or if I should add spotlights as well. I definitely want to avoid shadows while cutting or preparing food. A combination sounds reasonable, but how do you manage this in practice without making it look too busy or cluttered? I’m also interested in the installation: Does anyone have recommendations on how to achieve a neat and safe electrical connection with Ikea Metod, especially when integrating multiple light sources?

Basically, a combination of LED spotlights and LED strips is highly recommended. Spotlights provide directed, intense light and are well suited for precisely defined work areas, while strips create general lighting and atmosphere. I recommend the following:

- Integrate spotlights in at least two to three areas above the work surface
- LED strips under wall cabinets for broad, even illumination
- Color temperature: 3000 to 4000K, depending on preference
- Dimmer or smart controls for flexible adjustment

Regarding installation: Ikea Metod frames often offer little space for wiring. I recommend using cable channels or routing cables behind the kitchen backsplash. Also, pay attention to suitable transformers and secure connections. An electrician can ensure a clean solution.
