Hello everyone,

I’m planning to replace the knobs on the drawers of my IKEA KALLAX unit because I no longer like the original ones and want to customize it a bit. My question is: what sizes and diameters work best for the knobs on the KALLAX?

I’ve seen different recommendations online, for example, 30 mm (1.2 inches), 35 mm (1.4 inches), or 40 mm (1.6 inches) in diameter, but what is actually advisable so the knobs aren’t too large or impractical? Are there users here who have tried this and can share which dimensions are ideal for both looking good and functioning well?

Also, I’m curious about compatible mounting types. I assume the knobs are attached with a screw – but what length should be used?

I look forward to your experience and tips, so I don’t end up saving too much in the wrong area or choosing knobs that are too big or narrow. Thanks in advance!

The KALLAX is quite versatile, but most people recommend knobs with a diameter of around 30 to 35 mm (about 1.2 to 1.4 inches). This size fits well visually with its relatively clean and straightforward design without being too overpowering.

Yes, the knobs are usually attached with a machine screw. The screw length should be chosen so that it goes through the drawer front thickness and still has about 1 cm (0.4 inches) of thread exposed to ensure the knob holds securely. The KALLAX drawer front is about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick, so screws around 25 mm (1 inch) long are generally ideal.

Overall, I would recommend choosing knobs that are not too large to avoid interference when opening or moving the unit, and using screws about 25 mm (1 inch) long, unless you have unusually thick drawer fronts.

Good luck with your project! 🙂

Exactly, that fits well.

For the screws, I always use 25 mm (1 inch), which is sufficient even for thick fronts.

Larger than 40 mm (1.6 inches) often becomes impractical—too big and bulky.

Which sizes and diameters really work well for the knobs on the KALLAX?

I think it depends on whether you just want to change the design or if you want to perfectly match function and appearance.

30 or 35 mm (1.2 or 1.4 inches) are definitely conservative sizes, but why not try a larger knob? 45 mm or even 50 mm (1.8 or 2.0 inches) can make a strong statement, especially if the rest of the design remains minimalist.

Of course, you’ll need to adjust the screw length and make sure the knob doesn’t get in the way or look too bulky. But the KALLAX is a sturdy shelving unit, and for those who like to stand out, that’s not a bad idea.

In the end, it’s a matter of taste, but just asking “what fits” already shows some cautious thinking. My advice: go for it. With a drill and the right screws, it’s doable, and even if the knob attracts attention, that’s a plus for custom furniture 🙂

How exactly are you planning to attach it? Have you already received screws with the knobs, or do you want to sell them separately? The length is crucial, as Louie already mentioned.
