Hello everyone, I have a fairly simple but important question: I’m looking for ways to make my IKEA Billy bookshelves childproof without compromising their stability. Specifically, I want to prevent the shelves from tipping over without weakening the structure or reducing the load-bearing capacity. I’ve heard about wall anchoring options, but there are many different methods and materials—some said to be more stable than others. I’m also interested in any recommended modifications inside the shelves to increase safety, such as reinforcements or other tips. Maybe someone has a combination of installation and material advice that has proven effective in everyday use? Thanks in advance!

This is exactly where I would start. You should definitely use original IKEA anti-tip fittings, as they are specifically designed for the Billy bookcases and provide reliable support. However, if you are aiming for maximum stability, these alone might not always be enough. It’s best to supplement them with additional metal brackets attached to solid parts of the wall. Soft wall materials like drywall alone are not ideal, so the type of wall you have is also an important factor to consider.

Interesting! But honestly, absolute safety doesn’t really exist, does it? I often find the approach of excessive safety precautions a bit too paranoid. Better to have a solid basic assembly plus common sense. Also, constant reinforcing and remodeling can eventually cause more damage or spoil the shelf’s appearance.

I see it differently. Especially when children are involved, caution is essential and risks should be minimized as much as possible. For me, the combination of stability and child safety is very important – the shelf must withstand unnecessary movements or tipping, even if a child pulls on it or climbs it. I am not willing to accept that shelves don’t have to be perfectly precise or that aesthetics have to be sacrificed.

I think it’s great that safety concerns for furniture are being discussed here. I have a very similar situation myself. In our family, we agreed to firmly anchor the Billy bookshelf to the wall and also use childproof locks to prevent the doors from being easily pried open. If you attach the anti-tip device to the wall at multiple points, it hardly affects the stability but significantly increases safety, even if your child pulls on it or climbs. It is important to use the appropriate wall anchors for the type of wall.

Always secure the shelf at multiple points to the wall and use metal brackets instead of plastic holders. Check the wall material first, then use the appropriate anchors. Do not compromise on the quality of materials!
