Mume0Hello everyone, I’m looking for good DIY ideas to visually enhance my IKEA Platsa shelving unit. The standard look is quite simple and minimalist, which is generally fine, but I feel it lacks that certain something to give the furniture a more individual and higher-quality appearance.
Perhaps you have experience with simple yet effective techniques like redesigning the fronts, using colors, materials, or additional elements? I’m especially interested in how to achieve a significant visual improvement without major craftsmanship, preferably with specific materials or tools that are widely available.
How can Platsa be upgraded, for example, with vinyl wraps, lighting, stickers, or other creative ideas, without making the overall look too busy? I’m looking forward to your tips and examples of what has worked well for you!

Maybe you have experience with simple but effective techniques like redesigning fronts, using colors, materials, or adding extra elements?Hey, great question! I upgraded my PLATSA quite easily by adding some color – just removed all the doors and drawer fronts and painted them with matte acrylic paint in blue. Nothing complicated, but the difference is huge.
Another tip: install LED strips inside the shelves – they create a cool atmosphere and nicely highlight decorations. And if you like wood, you can add thin strips along the edges to make small frames – this gives the fronts more texture.
My motto: less is more, but a touch of color and lighting is often enough to spruce up these standard furniture pieces.
Good morning, I would like to elaborate a bit more.
What many people don’t know is that PLATSA elements can be easily customized with tailor-made shelves or back panels made of colored glass or acrylic. These can be made by professionals or cut to size yourself. This instantly gives the furniture a high-quality look.
It is also worth replacing the feet, for example with slim metal legs in a brass finish – this makes the shelving unit look much more attractive and modern.
Replacing the standard handles with leather pulls or wooden grip strips has also proven to be very effective for some. Very important: proper surface preparation before painting or applying adhesive to prevent peeling.
If you are handy, you can even build new doors in different materials – this opens up many possibilities toward a personalized vintage or industrial style.

For enhancing the visual appeal of the IKEA PLATSA system, I recommend the following practical measures:
- Replacing the plastic handles with metal alternatives, preferably brass or brushed steel
- Installing mirrored or painted back panels to add depth to the shelves
- Applying adhesive films with wood or stone textures, precisely cut to fit
- Installing LED lighting systems as indirect light sources
These modifications significantly increase the aesthetic value and can be carried out with manageable effort and cost. Careful preparation and accurate measurements are essential.
If needed, I can provide recommendations for suppliers and technical advice.
