Hello everyone,

I am currently focusing on the maintenance and repair of the IKEA Hemnes furniture series, especially dressers and cabinets. Since minor defects and wear occur frequently, I am interested in which spare parts, based on your experience, are most often needed to keep the furniture functional in the long term.

Are replacement parts mainly connecting elements such as screws and dowels, fittings and hinges, or rather larger components like drawer slides or side panels?

It would also be helpful to know if there are typical weak points that are particularly prone to breakage or wear, so that one can plan ahead when selecting and stocking spare parts.

Looking forward to your valuable experiences and advice!

In my experience, drawer slides are the components that most often need to be replaced. They tend to wear out after some time and no longer operate smoothly.

Hinges are also a weak point, as are plastic wall anchors. Simple screws rarely break.

A good question, which I’m happy to answer in detail. Basically, the Hemnes series features a very traditional and straightforward construction. Therefore, wear parts tend to appear mainly in a few categories:

- Drawer slides: These are the most prone to wear due to daily use. Often, the small plastic or metal components twist, or the rails become bent.
- Hinges: Many doors have hinges with plastic bushings that can loosen or break over time.
- Fasteners (wooden dowels, screws): These tend to loosen, especially with frequent movement or improper assembly.
- Handles: These often show wear or lose small screws.

Common mistakes during repairs include incorrect torque on screws, which then strip out, as well as using low-quality replacement parts that do not fit the series. My advice: order spare parts directly from IKEA, as compatible third-party parts often cause problems.

In summary, drawer slides and hinges are the main wear points; fasteners closely follow.

That sounds plausible, but I wonder whether this assessment is based on a representative sample or more on individual experience?

That is an important point. However, it’s worth considering whether alternatives might actually offer better durability. Spare part prices at IKEA can sometimes be quite high.

Also: Are there specific data on weak points, for example from damage reports or customer feedback, confirming that these parts fail most frequently? Or could the overall furniture design generally be the cause rather than individual components?

I would suggest including production materials, assembly instructions, and customer reports here to get a comprehensive picture.
