Hello everyone, I repurposed my Kallax shelf as a workshop storage unit to better organize my tools and materials. Unfortunately, I noticed that the plastic back panel, which is supposed to provide stability, simply fell out even though I didn’t do anything unusual with it. The back panel no longer fits into the designated grooves, and the whole shelf feels less stable now. My question to you: Has anyone had a similar experience or any tips on how to securely fix the back panel so it doesn’t fall out again? I’m considering attaching it with screws or another method, but I don’t want to cause any damage. Thanks in advance for your advice!

That's brilliant that you're using your KALLAX as a workshop shelf! 🙂 I had the same idea once—my plastic back panel didn’t fall out, but it was a bit loose. What I did was simply hammer in some extra small nails to keep the back panel securely in place. It holds firmly, and you can easily look inside without worrying about it slipping out! Give it a try, I definitely recommend it! 👍

Secure the plastic back panel with mounting brackets or reinforce the edges with hot glue. Screwing is difficult because the material is thin.

That sounds really frustrating if the back panel just falls out so easily. I think it’s great how you tackled the challenge. Sometimes these plastic back panels are really more meant to stabilize warped shelves rather than support loads. Consider whether an additional wooden back panel might be an alternative if the original one is too fragile. That would, of course, be a bit more work, but possibly also more durable.

Thanks in advance for the answers! @retau, the idea with the nails sounds good, but I’m a bit concerned that the back panel might get damaged or crack because of it. @Elijah42, good idea with the mounting brackets—I hadn’t considered something like that before. Is there anything suitable you would recommend from a hardware store? @boelnu, a wooden back panel is too much effort for me since I often rearrange the shelf. The plastic back panel just needs to fit easily. I’m surprised it slips out without any external force—maybe there’s a defect in the groove or the back panel itself?

The back panel of the KALLAX is made of thin plastic, which is inserted into slots using spacer tabs. While this securing method is sufficient for regular use, in a workshop environment with vibrations or changing loads, the back panel may come loose. In such cases, I recommend gently reinforcing it with self-adhesive edge protection profiles or thin wooden strips, which can be fixed with appropriate screws without damaging the shelving unit. Repairing with nails is generally not advisable for plastic.
