Hello everyone,

I have had a BILLY shelving unit for some time now, which keeps squeaking despite regular maintenance and care. The squeaking noise occurs especially when pulling out and pushing in the shelves or when moving parts of the unit, even though I regularly check, tighten all screws, and lightly oil the sliding surfaces.

My specific question is: Why does the BILLY continue to squeak despite regular maintenance? Are there any design or material-related reasons I might be overlooking, or special care instructions to consider in order to eliminate the noise permanently?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

The question of why the BILLY still squeaks despite regular maintenance can primarily be explained by mechanical friction effects that can occur even in well-maintained furniture.

It is important to note that, in addition to lubrication and securely tightened screws, the material used also plays a role. BILLY shelves are mostly made of particleboard, which can expand or contract slightly due to temperature fluctuations and humidity. These micro-movements cause minor friction between the components.

Additionally, plastic glides or metal fittings may show wear, which can increase the squeaking. I recommend not only lightly oiling the sliding surfaces but also, if necessary, switching to dry lubricants such as graphite powder, as these reduce the accumulation of dust and dirt.

In summary: even with good maintenance, material properties and clamping points are often the cause. Regularly checking the screws, combined with the use of appropriate dry lubricants, can usually significantly reduce the problem.

Oh, I totally know that! My BILLY also squeaked for years, even though I regularly oiled and tightened everything. The problem is usually that you simply forget the little corners where dust collects.

That's exactly right! I completely replaced the glides with suitable replacements – that worked wonders!

Keep at it, you can fix it 🙂 Just don’t give up!

To systematically address the issue "Why does the BILLY still squeak despite regular maintenance?", I recommend the following approach:

1. First step: Visual inspection – Carefully check all connection points (screws, dowels, fittings). Usually, the screws are tight, but the drilled holes in the particleboard may have slightly widened over time.
2. Second step: Check damping – There can be minimal movement between the panels. Insert thin felt or foam rubber strips at critical points to dampen these movements and thus avoid noise.
3. Third step: Optimize lubrication – Oil can attract dust, which may increase friction. Instead of liquid oil, I recommend dry graphite or PTFE spray (Teflon).
4. Fourth step: Check load – Excessive weight or imbalance can cause stress points that may squeak.

Summary: Even the most thorough maintenance cannot completely prevent noise if the basic construction and material properties allow these micro-movements. However, the tips above can significantly reduce the squeaking.

Squeaking usually comes from friction on wood or metal parts.

Check if screws are fully tightened everywhere, including places that might not be immediately visible.

Dry lubricants often work better than oil, as oil attracts dust.
