Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the countertops of the Ikea Metod system installed in my kitchen. Since I put a lot of strain on my kitchen countertops—whether through frequent cutting, hot pots, or occasional spills—I would like to know the best way to protect these countertops from wear and damage.

Are there specific protective coatings, care recommendations, or perhaps treatments that can make the material more durable? I have read that Metod countertops with a melamine resin surface are not completely resistant, and I would like to know what is practical and effective to keep the surface in good condition despite regular heavy use.

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips and experiences!

In addition to the topic of protective coatings, I would like to note that Ikea Metod countertops generally have a standard level of moisture resistance but do not offer high heat resistance. Heat damage is usually irreversible.

For maintenance and protection, the following are recommended:
- Protective mats for hot objects
- Cutting boards
- Avoid allowing liquids to stand on the surface
- Use an appropriate clear coat: polyurethane (PU) coatings are preferred, as they provide good abrasion and moisture resistance and adhere well to melamine.

Before application, the surface should be lightly sanded and thoroughly cleaned. Apply several thin layers for better protection.

This is essential. Without proper preparation, the paint will not adhere correctly. I also strongly recommend testing it first on an inconspicuous area to ensure the paint does not affect the appearance.

For several years now, I have been using transparent protective films specifically designed for melamine worktops. These films can be applied directly to the surface and protect against scratches as well as moisture. If you want to maintain the natural appearance of the worktop, these films are a good option without much effort.

Thanks for the tip, Alice. Are these films heat-resistant? I often place hot pans on the surface and I'm not sure if the film can withstand that. Or is it more meant as extra protection against cuts and scratches?

Also, I'm uncertain about how durable these films are and whether they might eventually peel off.

Transparent protective films are usually not very heat resistant. They provide good protection against scratches and moisture but should not be exposed to hot pots or pans for extended periods. Therefore, a heat-resistant trivet or mat is essential.

Also, I’m unsure about the durability of such films and whether they might start peeling over time.

Typically, these films last around two to three years depending on use. It is important to thoroughly clean beforehand and have a smooth surface. Peeling often occurs due to dust or uneven surfaces.
