Hello everyone, I recently bought a Billy shelving unit with doors, but one of the doors hangs crooked when closing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sit properly on the hinges and doesn’t close flush with the frame, which looks quite unsightly and is annoying. My question is: What steps should I take to correctly fix a crooked door on Billy shelving models? Are there specific screws or adjustments on the hinges that can be made to realign the door properly? I have already tried loosening and repositioning the hinges slightly, but so far without success. Thanks in advance for your tips!
Hello juliansi,
The BILLY cabinet with doors usually has the door attached with two adjustable hinges. First, you should check whether the screws on the door panel and the cabinet body are properly tightened, as they can loosen from opening and closing. If the door is hanging unevenly, it usually helps to slightly loosen the rear screws on the hinges with a screwdriver, so you can move the door a little up, down, or sideways.
The hinges themselves often have small adjustment options, such as a cam screw, to align the door horizontally. It’s important not to over-tighten, to avoid anything sticking or rubbing.
Also, a door that comes off can be problematic if the shelf isn’t perfectly level. So, have a look to see if your cabinet is standing properly and shows no deformation.
If you want, I can explain the exact steps in more detail.

I have encountered cases where the shelf unit itself was not level, and people spent ages adjusting the doors without success.
So, the issue might not be the door being faulty or incorrectly adjusted, but rather the base or the installation itself. That’s why I would first check with a spirit level whether the shelf is perfectly level. Only then can you be sure that repairing the door is worthwhile.

so it might not be the door that is broken or misalignedYou’re right, the shelving unit should always be checked first. If it is poorly installed or uneven, no door will fit perfectly. However, the two adjustable screws on the BILLY hinge are the main points to focus on when a door hangs crooked.
I recommend the following steps for a precise adjustment:
1. Remove the door
2. Loosen the screws on the hinge plates attached to the shelving unit using a Phillips screwdriver
3. Position the hinges so they are perfectly straight
4. Rehang the door
5. Use the cam screw to adjust the door horizontally
6. Tighten the screws again
This usually results in a very good fit.

Otherwise: loosen all screws, align the door, and then carefully tighten them again. BILLY often comes with small plastic wedges or spacers that can help to better align the door. Check if any of these were included with your delivery.
