Robin5Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing the challenge of assembling the IKEA Malm chest of drawers, and it’s proving to be quite difficult. Although the instructions seem detailed, they are sometimes unclear, and putting together all the numerous parts is really confusing. In particular, some screws and side panels hardly fit, and it seems to me that some of the drilled holes are not exactly aligned.
Do you have any tips or know of reliable resources where I can find targeted help for assembling the Malm chest of drawers? For example, specific video tutorials, helpful forums, or even professional services?
I want to avoid assembling it incorrectly or ending up with an unstable piece of furniture. I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or recommendations!

In particular, some screws and side panels barely fit, and it seems to me that some drill holes are not quite accurate. That sounds really frustrating! I once assembled a Malm chest of drawers myself and know how quickly you can get annoyed when parts don’t fit quite right.
What helped me was first carefully sorting all the parts and checking if I was really using the correct screws. Sometimes the wrong part is the issue because the packaging got mixed up.
Also, sometimes it’s worth taking a half-hour break and starting again with a clear mind – I then made sure to loosely screw in all the screws first and only tightened everything properly at the end.
YouTube videos often help me because you can visually see how the furniture is assembled. Try searching for “IKEA Malm chest of drawers assembly instructions” – there are some very good tutorials.
Keep at it, you’ll manage! 🙂

1. Assembly instructions: IKEA instructions are minimalist but essentially logically structured. It is important to always carefully check that you follow the intended sequence, as skipping steps can complicate the process later on.
2. Drill holes: If the holes don’t fit exactly, you should never force anything. Instead, it often helps to slightly adjust the holes using a wood drill bit or a chisel. Be careful, though, to avoid compromising stability.
If you are not confident with DIY work, IKEA sometimes offers an assembly service. That might be an option if you find the build too challenging.
Could you please specify which screws or components are causing problems? That would allow for more targeted assistance.

1. Parts Overview: Lay out all components clearly and organize them according to the manual—sort screws not only by size but also by type (e.g., flathead screws, wood screws, dowels).
2. Fit Accuracy: With the Malm chest of drawers, the holes are often pre-drilled, but sometimes there are small manufacturing tolerances. Use a small file or sanding tool to slightly adjust holes if necessary—but only minimally to maintain proper fit.
3. Screw Usage: Some screws, especially cam screws, require a specific tightening torque. Initially tighten these by hand and avoid over-tightening, as this can cause material damage.
4. Assembly Aid: A square or clamps can help keep parts properly aligned. This is especially useful when connecting the back panel to the side panels.
5. Additional Tutorials: Besides the official IKEA PDF instructions, also check community websites like “Ikea hackers.net.” They offer not only modification guides but also helpful assembly tips.
Do you already have an appropriate tool set? IKEA furniture often includes an Allen key, but a small cordless drill with torque control can significantly ease the assembly process.
Hey Robin5,
I really like your detailed question because many people don’t dare to explain exactly where the problem lies! The Malm dresser is definitely a classic, but assembling it can be frustrating – I know that from personal experience 🙂.
What helped me was treating the assembly like a small project: good preparation, allowing plenty of time, and celebrating small victories along the way!
That’s my number one tip! Without a driver, the whole process takes forever, and you risk overtightening screws.
And if something really doesn’t fit: always take a step back first and carefully reread the instructions.
Back then, I put together a playlist of IKEA assembly videos on YouTube – if you want, I can send you the links.
Keep your spirits up, you’ll manage! 🙂
