Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify some of my Malm furniture to make it more child-friendly, as my child is becoming mobile and curious. I am especially interested in methods to round off sharp corners, secure hanging drawers, and generally make the furniture safer and more suitable for children. I also have practical questions such as: What materials are suitable and safe for padding? How can I prevent drawers or doors from being pulled out and causing pinching hazards? Are there any proven tips or experiences you could share?

I am really looking forward to ideas, recommendations, and possibly DIY guides or product suggestions that can make these modifications as safe and practical as possible. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

I would first cover all sharp edges with foam or rubber bumpers. For drawers, there are safety latches that prevent them from being pulled out. Additionally, I recommend magnetic locks to make doors childproof.

Hello Nudine,

Your questions are very practical and justified, as Malm furniture is often angular and not specifically designed for small children. For padding, soft foam edge protectors, available in furniture departments, work well and are non-toxic and washable. If you want to childproof drawers, I would recommend using special child safety locks from specialist retailers – these can usually be installed without drilling and are very effective.

Another idea is to slightly block the drawers with wooden wedges when not in use to prevent fingers from getting caught. Be sure to consider the corners where your child most often walks or plays.

That’s true, and such solutions are often more flexible and gentler than fixed locks.

If you have any more questions about installation, feel free to ask. 🙂

Absolutely! I would even go a step further and recommend using edge protectors that are specifically certified for children. This way, you can be sure everything is free from harmful substances and durable.

I’ve also had good experience fitting drawers with plastic child safety locks. They are easy to use once the child grows older, but they provide excellent protection for toddlers.

One more tip from me: if you want to modify old Malm furniture, check its stability first. Sometimes it’s worth tightening screws or adding missing stoppers. After all, “child-friendly” also means “safe from tipping or wobbling.”

Good luck, and if you run into any issues, feel free to ask. I really appreciate it when parents take safety so seriously! 🙂
