Hello everyone,

I accidentally broke a door on my IKEA Kallax shelf unit. The door came completely off because the hinge seemed worn out, and the material there is quite thin. Now I’m looking for a suitable replacement – either an original IKEA spare part or an alternative solution to repair the door. It’s important to me that the replacement matches the appearance reasonably well and is sturdy enough to last for a long time. Has anyone had experience with replacing Kallax doors? Are IKEA spare parts still available to buy, or will I need to make or find a new door myself? I would appreciate any advice, including about tools or alternatives like doors from other shelving systems, if those might be compatible. Thanks in advance for your help!

Ikea usually sells spare parts through their customer service. Try contacting them directly; they often send you the hinge and the door if they are still available.

Hello Lisa,

I can give you a simple step-by-step guide on how to proceed:

1. Request replacement parts from IKEA: It’s best to call customer service or use their online replacement parts form. Many Kallax units are still available, and some doors can still be ordered.

2. Record technical details: Measure the door dimensions precisely (height, width, thickness) and note the type of hinges – typically metal hinges with a 35 mm (1.4 inch) drill hole.

3. Alternative purchase: If original replacement parts are no longer available, doors from other IKEA series or hardware store doors might fit – be sure to check all measurements carefully!

4. DIY option: If you have woodworking skills, you can have a suitable door cut from plywood or MDF board and then attach it with appropriate hinges.

5. Installation tips: For fitting, a cordless drill with a torque setting is recommended to avoid over-tightening the hinges.

Summary: First, request original parts from IKEA; if unavailable, take measurements and check hardware stores or local cabinetmakers. I would advise against using parts from unreliable sources.

I hope this helps you 🙂.

This is a sensible approach, but I wonder if there might be alternative repairs before replacing an entire door. For example, reinforcing the damaged area with wood glue and metal brackets could be an option. This way, you can continue using the existing hinges and stabilize the material.

Also, I think it’s important not to forget how often Kallax doors are just visually worn. In that case, replacing them with an open shelf might be worth considering if function matters more than appearance.

What do you think about such pragmatic solutions? Sometimes, the perfect door isn’t the best solution.

Thanks for the suggestion! The door is really completely broken off, right at the edge where the hinge was attached – a chunk has basically broken out of one of the wood edges, which makes gluing it back together difficult. Reinforcing with metal brackets could definitely make sense, as long as I can access the break point properly without too much additional work.

That’s also an option. I do have some DIY experience, but I was hoping to use original parts if possible. I’ll definitely contact IKEA customer service today to see if they still have any. An open solution wouldn't be a problem for the room, but actually I’d prefer to replace the door for aesthetic reasons, so thanks for the idea.

Does anyone have experience with the dimensions? I’m assuming Kallax doors are around 33 cm (13 inches) wide and 38 cm (15 inches) high – or can this vary?

Kallax doors are usually 33.5 cm (13 inches) wide and 38 cm (15 inches) high. The dimensions are fairly standardized to fit the Kallax compartments. If you measure carefully, a new door with these dimensions should fit.

Just make sure to check which type of hinges are installed, as there can be differences.
