Hello everyone, I am currently planning my setup with Ikea Platsa shelving units and considering which lighting would be best suited for them. Since the shelves are modular and often have different depths and heights, I am wondering how to illuminate them effectively so that the contents are clearly visible without the light source being too dominant or too weak. I am particularly interested in whether LED light strips or spot lighting work better, and which color temperature is recommended (e.g., warm white vs. cool white) to make the furniture both cozy and functional overall. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which lighting works particularly well with Ikea PLATSA shelves? I am also open to tips on installation or cable management. Thanks in advance!

LED light strips are ideal because they can be easily customized and provide even illumination. Warm white creates a pleasant atmosphere. Spots are focused but can cast shadows.

For lighting Ikea PLATSA shelves, I recommend using a combination of slim LED light strips, preferably with dimmable functionality. These can be discreetly mounted under the shelves and provide even illumination of the compartments without causing glare.

The color temperature should be chosen based on the desired atmosphere: warm white (approximately 2700–3000 Kelvin) for a cozy feel, neutral white (around 3500 Kelvin) for a clearer, more neutral look. Cool white is less common for residential furniture, as it can appear too clinical.

Run cables and outlets neatly behind or inside the back panel of the PLATSA unit to keep the installation clean and as invisible as possible. If smart home integration is desired, there are LED strips that can be controlled via app or voice commands.

I installed warm white LED strips in my PLATSA unit, which creates a really cozy atmosphere, almost like having a small home library! 😄 To avoid harsh lighting, I chose dimmable LEDs.

I totally agree with that. Thanks to the slim design of the strips, they almost disappear from view. Regarding installation: self-adhesive options are easy to use but in my case, they peeled off after a few months — so I ended up screwing them in place. Managing the cables is also a real challenge for me; I bundled them behind the shelves and used cable channels.

In my experience, LED light strips are better suited than spotlights because they provide more even illumination. Warm white creates a cozy atmosphere, while cool white often feels too cold. Additionally, LEDs are generally energy-efficient and long-lasting. Installation is straightforward with self-adhesive models.
