Hello everyone, I’m currently working on an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet and facing the challenge of properly installing the cabinet doors with recessed handles.
My specific question: How do I mount the doors with recessed handles so that they close precisely, have no gaps, and the handles are perfectly aligned?
I have already attached the hinges and roughly positioned the doors, but I’m struggling with the fine adjustments, especially aligning the recessed handles properly, since the edges need to fit cleanly.
Is there a particular sequence or procedure I should follow? What should I pay special attention to during installation in order to achieve a consistent and durable result?
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Handle recesses should fit properly from the start if the door is correctly installed. That is basically true, but it also depends on the exact model variant and manufacturing tolerances. Especially with tall and narrow doors or when multiple doors are installed side by side, even minimal deviations can become noticeable.

Is there a way to check or adjust this more precisely without having to replace the entire door? For inspection, you could slide a thin plastic strip (e.g., a router edge) along the handle recess on the installed door to feel for any unevenness. I would only correct this by fine-tuning the hinges, as there is no other adjustment play available.
I would like to add that the recessed handles on Metod doors are generally machined precisely, so if installed correctly, there should be no fitting issues. However, it is important to:
- Make sure the hinges are properly aligned during installation (especially horizontally and in depth).
- Hang the door roughly first, then adjust it step by step using the adjustment screws.
- When doors are installed next to each other, check the gap widths with a joint gauge.
If you regularly experience problems with the recessed handles, it can help to first check the door’s flatness without the hinges attached (possibly using a lightweight panel as a base).
This ensures a clean appearance over time and prevents premature wear caused by uneven contact surfaces.

- The adjustment screws on Metod hinges are usually very precise, allowing for three-dimensional adjustment: height, depth, and lateral alignment.
- Handle recess doors should be installed so that the recessed handle is flush and aligned with the door front.
- If the recess appears crooked, it is almost always caused by an alignment error in the hinges.
- After adjusting, tighten all screws again to prevent the settings from shifting.
I recommend having good lighting and a spirit level ready for the installation.

I think this topic is great, and I can only encourage you: With some patience and a systematic approach, the handle recesses will work out! Just take it step by step and don’t rush. Checking with a spirit level and measuring tape is definitely worthwhile, as you quickly notice where small adjustments are needed. Good luck with the adjustments – the result looks really nice in the end!!!
