Hello everyone,

I am planning to apply a paint finish myself to my IKEA Besta shelving system to give it a durable and high-quality look. I am wondering which types of paint or coatings are especially suitable for a long-lasting and resistant surface, particularly considering good adhesion to the mostly melamine-coated or laminated surfaces of Besta.

I am especially interested in recommendations on paint types (e.g., acrylic paints, alkyd resin paints, spray paints) as well as tips on application and preparation techniques so that the result is not only visually appealing but also remains stable for years without peeling or yellowing.

Does anyone have experience or even specific advice on which paints work best long-term on IKEA Besta and how to best prepare the surfaces to ensure optimal adhesion?

Thank you in advance!

For a durable finish, I recommend water-based acrylic paint. It is important to thoroughly clean and lightly sand the surface before painting. Apply several thin coats and allow each to dry completely. Alkyd resin paint is durable but has a strong odor and takes longer to dry.

Hello janbau,

your considerations are very sensible. For IKEA Besta, two aspects are particularly important: first, the adhesion of the paint on the often smooth surfaces, and second, the durability of the finished result.

Regarding paint types: water-based acrylic paints are very popular because they have low odor, are easy to apply, and offer some flexibility. For an extra hard and scratch-resistant surface, polyurethane or two-component (2K) paints are recommended, although these are more challenging to work with and often require special primers.

For preparation, I recommend:
- thoroughly cleaning the surfaces, for example with alcohol or a mild dish soap
- lightly sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 240-320) to slightly roughen the surface
- for melamine or foil surfaces, using a specialized adhesion promoter (plastic primer) significantly improves adhesion

Then apply several thin coats of paint. Be sure to follow the drying times to prevent skinning or blistering.

This approach has proven effective in many DIY projects and ensures a long-lasting result.

That’s exactly the point: yes, high-quality alkyd resin paints are incredibly durable – but honestly, who wants to live with strong fumes in their living space for days, especially for a relatively simple piece of furniture? I would argue that the "special durability" of Besta is often overrated.

If the paint doesn’t adhere properly, even the toughest paint won’t help. Much more important is careful surface preparation and using a good primer.

Personally, I consider the type of paint to be less important – what matters far more is the entire system around it. So, if you want to be on the safe side: primer plus acrylic paint, preferably matte, which can forgive small mistakes and looks good for a long time.

What do you think?

Additional information:

IKEA Besta surfaces are often melamine-coated or laminated, so the paint is always applied as an extra layer on top of this base. To ensure long-lasting durability, it is essential that the paint has good flexibility, as rigid paints tend to chip more easily during use.

Acrylic paints are advantageous in this regard because they provide this elasticity. Additionally, there are special acrylic-polyurethane combination paints that offer both good adhesion and durability.

Important: Before painting, use a plastic primer suitable for melamine-coated or laminated surfaces. Without this priming step, no paint will adhere permanently.

Furthermore, applying a protective topcoat (e.g., a clear coat) helps prevent scratches and yellowing, significantly extending the lifespan of the finish.

In summary: adhesion promoter + acrylic paint (preferably with polyurethane content) + protective topcoat = durable finish on Besta.
