Hello everyone, I’m planning to add doors to my old IKEA KALLAX shelf, as I want to make the open storage space a bit more enclosed to better keep things tidy and protect against dust. Now I’m wondering: What is the most efficient way to install suitable doors on an older KALLAX unit that originally came without doors? Are there special mounting kits or assembly instructions that work well to attach the doors securely and in an attractive way? I am especially interested in any alternative solutions to the usual IKEA KALLAX doors or matching fronts, possibly DIY options or hacks that make installation easier or reduce the cost. I would really appreciate any well-founded recommendations, personal experiences, or tips for preparation and handling when retrofitting doors. Thanks in advance!
Some time ago, I worked on a similar project and can easily understand how, especially at the beginning, you need to consider what type of doors will actually fit and whether to use prefabricated solutions or create your own.
One thing I learned: The original KALLAX doors from IKEA are often the simplest option because the fittings are precisely matched to the dimensions. However, I have also seen how it’s possible to design custom fronts using standard hinges and plexiglass or wooden panels if you don’t like the standard look.
Last but not least: The stability also depends heavily on correctly installing the hinges and, if necessary, adding reinforcements – especially for older shelving units. It’s somewhat a dilemma between easy retrofitting and the concern that it might not appear truly stable.

The original doors are convenient, but quite limited in design and functionality – often a dealbreaker for people who really want to change the look of the shelving unit.
Also: why rely solely on IKEA when there are DIY options that can look better, be sturdier, and add extra character? Installing doors on an older KALLAX unit is actually perfect for individuals who don’t want mass-produced products, right?
Just my opinion that the DIY approach shouldn’t be dismissed so quickly.

The original doors are practical, but quite limited in design and functionThat’s true, but you shouldn’t underestimate the effort and cost involved in custom solutions. Not everyone has the time or the craftsmanship skills to build a clean and durable door that fits well and closes properly.
From my experience, efficiency and sustainability often take priority over design, especially with older furniture. No one wants to be tweaking a DIY solution after just a few months because it doesn’t hold up or sticks.
That’s why I think with old KALLAX shelves, you have to weigh whether custom builds are really worth it or if it’s better to rely on proven products—possibly with minor modifications.
From a factual perspective, IKEA does offer suitable doors and frames for the KALLAX shelving unit, which are attached using a simple clip system. This system is designed to make use of the pre-drilled holes in the KALLAX panels, which can sometimes be challenging with older models due to slight wear on the drill holes.
Alternatively, magnetic catches combined with door hinges can be used, either mounted directly on the side panel of the shelf or on a custom adapter plate. It is important in any case to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the mounting.
Custom builds can be made from MDF or plywood, which provide a certain level of durability and finish options. If the original drill holes are missing or unusable, special angle brackets or screw systems are recommended.
My advice: first check the condition of the KALLAX shelf sides and document the existing mounting options before deciding on a solution.

First, check the condition of the KALLAX shelf sides and document the existing mounting optionsThanks for the practical advice, I will definitely do that. My shelf is in good condition, but I’m not sure how stable the inner panels still are for screws.
Does anyone have experience using special wood filler or reinforcement plates to strengthen the mounting holes in an old KALLAX? I’d rather not just screw in anywhere just to make it hold, but I also don’t want to build completely new sides or alter the shelf if it’s not necessary.
Are there any particular products that have proven effective?
