Hello everyone, I have been having problems for some time with damaged handles on my Malm dressers from IKEA. On some drawers, the handles no longer fit properly or are even cracked. Since I like to do repairs myself, I would like to know: What steps do you recommend to safely and permanently repair or replace damaged Malm handles? I have noticed that the mounting screws are often loose or the material itself seems brittle. Are there any special replacement parts or technical tips for Malm furniture that I should keep in mind to prevent the handle from breaking again quickly? Thanks for your advice and experiences!
Hi, first completely unscrew the screws and remove the handle. Then get new screws or replacement handles. Note: MALM handles usually have standard dimensions, so buy matching screws to size. Repair worn holes with wood glue or small wooden dowels before mounting the handle.
Hello Plo-flo, your issue is a common weak point with MALM furniture, specifically the attachment of the handles to the cabinet fronts. Most MALM handles are fixed with simple machine screws that go through the panel material and are secured on the inside of the front with nuts or threaded inserts. Because of the relatively thin chipboard panels, the screw holes can tear out or loosen over time.
My recommendation for repair would be the following steps:
1. Remove the damaged handles along with the screws.
2. Check the screw holes for damage – if they are worn out, you can use wood filler or glued-in wooden dowels to enlarge the fastening area.
3. Alternatively, you can install threaded inserts (also called knock-in nuts) which provide a more stable anchor.
4. Choose suitable replacement handles that either use the same drilled holes or drill new holes if you switch to different models.
5. Avoid overtightening the screws to prevent further damage to the material.
It would be helpful to know whether the handles are completely broken or if only the attachment is damaged. Also, the thickness of the front panel is relevant – are these the original MDF/chipboard panels or fronts made of a different material?
Maybe you can also add whether the handles are painted or made of plastic, as this affects the repair method. I hope this already helps – I’m happy to provide more detailed guidance on individual steps if needed.

This is a very important tip! I have also experienced that tightening too much can easily cause the material to crack. One option is to use small washers behind the handles to better distribute the pressure.
Additionally, it is essential to make sure that replacement handles are ordered with the correct length and screw thickness – some online retailers also offer special repair kits.
For cracked plastic handles, a strong two-component adhesive can sometimes help, but the durability is limited. If the handles are completely broken, replacement is usually the best solution.
I hope this provides some useful suggestions.

Thank you for the detailed answers. The handles are usually not completely broken, but the holes in the front panel look worn out. I also find that the material seems relatively thin and fragile.
That sounds reasonable. Regarding the threaded inserts that Surela mentioned— is there a specific size or brand that works well with MALM? I once read about knock-in nuts in a forum, but I’m not sure if they hold well in MDF panels.
Also, I would like to know if gluing with wood glue and wooden dowels provides a durable solution for assembly and disassembly, or if it is more suitable for a one-time repair. Thanks in advance!
