Hello everyone, I have a question for the community that I hope some experienced Ikea movers or furniture transporters can answer: How do you transport Ikea Brimnes furniture, especially wardrobes and beds, without them getting scratches or other visible damage during the move?

During my last move, I unfortunately got some slight scratches on the edges, even though I handled the furniture fairly carefully. It is probably due to the combination of the rather smooth surface and the thin components.

I am particularly interested in:
- Which protective materials are recommended (blankets, plastic wrap, padding)?
- How should the furniture be best positioned and secured to prevent slipping?
- Are there general tips to reduce the likelihood of damage?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello danny66,

this question is important and often underestimated. The Brimnes furniture is generally sensitive because it consists of coated particle boards with a smooth surface. Here is a structured guide on how to avoid damage during transport:

- Preparation: Clean individual furniture parts thoroughly to ensure no dirt acts as an abrasive.
- Protective material: It is best to use thick, padded moving blankets or furniture fleece. A single layer is often not enough; folding and layering multiple times for better padding is recommended.
- Securing: Furniture should be firmly secured with tension straps or ratchet straps. Be sure to use edge protectors to minimize pressure on vulnerable areas.
- Positioning: Lying flat is often better, but be careful: with wardrobes and beds, weight can cause pressure marks. The ideal is a horizontal, resting position with evenly distributed load.
- Preventing shifting: Fill gaps between furniture and vehicle walls with foam or blankets.

A common mistake is protecting furniture loosely with blankets only and not securing it properly. This leads to scratches caused by rubbing movements.

In summary: multiple layers of padding + secure fastening = significantly less damage.

Plastic protective films do not work for Brimnes furniture because they slip off. Moving blankets and corner protectors are better. Secure the furniture properly with straps.

To complement the previous recommendations:

The surface of the Brimnes is made of melamine resin-coated particleboard, which is resistant to moisture but mechanically sensitive to impacts or scratches. I recommend:

- Avoid hard contact with rough surfaces or sharp objects during transport.
- Use elastic, non-slip cushioning materials to stabilize the furniture.
- If possible, transport the disassembled parts in the original packaging, as it is optimized for protection.

Typical mistakes include stacking heavy items on the furniture parts, which can cause pressure marks.

I have had good results by wrapping each wooden piece individually with packing paper and then covering them with blankets. This way, the edges were protected and there was hardly any visible damage.

This is an important point: elasticity helps absorb pressure during vibrations.

I recommend (depending on the vehicle) foam corner protectors for the edges. They are easy to cut to size and provide good edge protection with cushioning.

Also, if you transport the Brimnes upright, make sure the plug connections are secure and don’t wobble – loose parts can get damaged when tightening straps.

Especially with larger cabinets, having a second person to help protect the edges during handling is advisable.
