Hello everyone, I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to make them childproof, as we will soon have a toddler in the house.

I am especially interested in all practical methods to secure the shelves against tipping and to prevent small children from injuring themselves or knocking the shelves over. Which specific fixings or safety measures do you recommend—such as wall anchors, edge protectors, or locks?

Also: Are there any sorting or storage tips for safely keeping dangerous items or small parts in the BILLY shelves out of children’s reach?

I look forward to your experiences and ideas, especially on how you have made this safe in the long term while keeping it practical for everyday use.

Hello Arian60! Great that you’re thinking about safety – that’s crucial when you have little explorers at home ;-)

Very important: make sure to securely attach shelves to the wall! IKEA usually provides screws and brackets for this – definitely don’t skip them. For added stability, you can also use anti-tip devices from a hardware store, which often work like extra safety straps.

Edge protectors are also a big plus, especially if your little ones like to move around quickly. Soft foam corner guards are easy to install and help prevent painful bumps.

And for locking off sensitive compartments you want to keep secure, there are childproof locks available to retrofit (like self-adhesive latches). This way, you can stay relaxed even if the little ones are curious.

It sounds like a lot of effort, but safety comes first! 🙂

Hello Arian60, you have already mentioned some important points. I would like to add a bit more in a structured way:

1. Wall Anchoring: As JORDON mentioned, the included brackets are the basic option. Alternatively, you can use additional metal brackets from a hardware store, which provide more stability.

2. Tipping Safety: Besides anchoring, there are safety straps available that prevent tipping if a child pulls on or climbs the shelf.

3. Edge Protection: Soft foam or silicone edge protectors on the corners of the shelves can effectively prevent injuries.

4. Drawers/Cabinet Doors: Special childproof locks for furniture can help keep children from accessing dangerous or fragile items.

5. Interior Organization: To store small hazardous parts or heavy objects out of reach, small boxes or baskets can be used to help organize and secure items.

One important tip: regularly check the stability, especially as children grow older and more active.

I hope this helps!

Make sure to secure the shelves to the wall!

Absolute priority: wall fastening.

Additionally: edge protectors on the corners and child safety locks for opening the doors.

Arrange heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. This keeps the shelf more stable.

Usually, nothing more is needed.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add a short guide on how to make BILLY shelves child-safe – step by step:

1. Attach the shelf to the wall: IKEA usually provides mounting kits that include a wall plug and screw for securing the shelf to the wall. Make sure to use an appropriate drill bit for your wall type (concrete, drywall, etc.) as preparation!

2. Increase stability with additional anti-tip straps: Hardware stores offer accessories such as safety straps that you can fasten from the back of the shelf to a wall anchor – this reduces the risk of it tipping forward.

3. Add corner protectors: Often underestimated, foam or silicone corner guards are easy to apply and help prevent painful scrapes.

4. Child locks for doors and drawers: Self-adhesive furniture locks ensure that little hands cannot easily open cabinet doors. Especially useful for sharp or fragile items.

5. Internal organization: Use storage boxes with lids for small parts. This way, you ensure that children cannot swallow or pull out small items.

Finally, it’s worth checking the entire setup for stability every few months. Children grow quickly and their behavior changes; jumping on furniture is not uncommon.

Hope this helps you and others here!
