MIPASARHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of the baseboards for my IKEA Metod kitchen project and want to make sure I don’t miss any important installation steps during planning and execution.
My question is: What specific installation steps need to be carefully followed when installing IKEA Metod baseboards? I am particularly interested in aspects such as surface preparation, the order of fastening, joining the corners, and any special considerations that differ from other types of baseboards.
It would also be helpful to know which tools I should ideally have on hand and if there are any tips for mounting the baseboards cleanly and securely without damaging them during installation.
Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendations!

There are some important steps to follow when installing the IKEA Metod baseboards to ensure a clean and durable result:
- Preparation: First, the mounting surface must be clean, dry, and level. Any unevenness should be smoothed out beforehand.
- Cutting to length: The baseboards need to be cut to fit the length of the kitchen cabinet run. It is best to use a fine saw to achieve clean edges.
- Attaching mounting clips: IKEA uses special clips to attach the baseboards to the Metod base cabinets. These clips are either screwed in or snapped on. Precise positioning is important to avoid later warping.
- Snapping the baseboard into place: After the clips are installed, the baseboard is simply snapped onto or pressed against the clips. This ensures a neat and tension-free installation.
- Corner joints: For inside corners, special corner connectors can be used to neatly join the baseboards. Outside corners are usually adjusted with miter cuts.
- Tools: Recommended tools include a tape measure, screwdriver, fine hand saw or jigsaw, spirit level, and possibly a utility knife for small adjustments.
- Tip: Avoid installing the baseboards too early to prevent unnecessary damage to the countertop or flooring later on.
Following these steps is essential for a proper installation that looks good and functions well.

Preparation: First, the installation surface must be clean, dry, and level. This is actually the most important point that many people underestimate. I would add that, besides the surface itself, the alignment of the Metod cabinets is crucial. The baseboards are mounted onto the plinth panels, and if these panels are not exactly at the same height and at right angles, the baseboard cannot be installed properly.
A crucial step before installation is therefore a thorough check with a spirit level and, if necessary, adjusting the cabinet bases. This is the only way to avoid gaps and uneven joints later on.

Corner joints: Special corner connectors can be used for internal cornersHere, I recommend taking care with the miter cuts, as even slight inaccuracies become very noticeable on white baseboards. It is therefore worth making a test cut on a small scrap piece of wood before cutting the final baseboards.
Regarding tools: In addition to a saw and screwdriver, I have found a sanding block useful to smooth the cut edges slightly and fit the baseboards precisely.
One more question for the thread starter: Do you plan to install the baseboards directly against the floor, or leave a small gap to later install a flooring material underneath?

Are you planning to install the baseboards flush with the floor or leave a small gap to allow for a floor covering to be laid underneath later? This is a very important question. I often notice that the space for the baseboards changes significantly if flooring work is still to be done before the final installation (for example, laying tiles or laminate). Therefore, be sure to assess in advance whether you still have flooring work planned or if the floor is already finished.
For the installation itself, I recommend planning the baseboards according to the project, especially regarding the order of installation:
- First, precisely align and install the Metod base cabinets.
- Then attach the plinth panels using clips, which provides a stable foundation for the baseboards.
- The baseboards should be installed last to avoid scratches and damage during construction work.
- When working on corners, carefully use miter cuts and, if necessary, apply adhesive for added stability.
Personally, I advise using the supplied clips according to the manufacturer’s instructions and not applying excessive force when snapping them in, as the baseboards can break.
If the floor is uneven in places, alternative fixings might make sense as an addition, such as double-sided mounting tape as a helper.
I hope this detailed overview is helpful.
