ᐅ Is it possible to repair IKEA BRIMNES furniture yourself, or do you need to use replacement parts?

lelo59Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question regarding the BRIMNES furniture series from IKEA: Is it generally possible to repair damaged BRIMNES furniture yourself without issues, or is it absolutely necessary to get replacement parts directly from IKEA?
I’m asking in detail because BRIMNES often involves relatively simple constructions, but sometimes also more delicate joints, screws, or plastic components, which in our case have already been damaged.
So, is it enough to fix minor damage like scratches, loose connectors, or small cracks yourself with wood glue and some basic tools, or does that risk making the repair worse and it’s better to use replacement parts from the manufacturer? Are there any experiences regarding which types of defects are really suitable for DIY repair and when buying replacement parts is the better option?
Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Hello lelo59,
First of all, that’s a good starting question. BRIMNES is usually made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which means repairs are a bit different compared to solid wood furniture.
Regarding your question about repairing it yourself:
- Small scratches or worn edges can usually be fixed easily with wood filler or a furniture touch-up pen. No replacement parts are needed for these.
- If screw holes have become loose, you can often reinforce the connection effectively with wooden dowels or wood glue and clamps.
- However, when it comes to broken plastic connectors, hinges, or special mounting parts, self-repair is limited since these parts are precisely fitted, and ordering replacements is usually recommended.
- Cracks in the board, if too large, should not be fixed with glue alone as this can compromise stability.
My advice: For visible, minor damage, feel free to repair it yourself; for functional parts, it’s better to order replacement components. IKEA surprisingly offers many spare parts for BRIMNES, also available online.
Summary:
- Fix cosmetic minor damage yourself
- Replace load-bearing and mechanical parts
If you like, I can also provide information about the appropriate tools for these repairs.

With broken or snapped plastic connectors, hinges, or special mounts, self-repair is limited because the parts are precisely fitted, so replacement parts are recommended.I fully agree with this. It is important to understand that BRIMNES furniture is made from a combination of MDF panels and specially designed connectors that are manufactured with precision.
In case of damage to load-bearing or movable parts, repairs without original replacement parts are usually neither durable nor sufficiently reliable.
Furthermore, there is a significant risk of weakening the furniture structure in the long term if improper methods are used for temporary fixes.
My objective advice: to maintain functionality, prioritize using replacement parts; minor cosmetic damages can be repaired independently with appropriate materials.

Is it possible to easily repair damaged BRIMNES furniture yourself, or is it absolutely necessary to get replacement parts from IKEA?Hey lelo59, great question! I have the same BRIMNES wardrobe in my bedroom, and believe me, I’ve already tinkered with it a bit.
To keep it short: if it’s just minor damage—scratches, small cracks, loose screws—you can usually fix that yourself. Wood glue and a bit of patience usually do the trick.
But if the piece is really falling apart (especially the plastic parts, which aren’t very durable), it’s better to order replacement parts. Sure, it takes some effort, but it’s less frustrating in the long run.
One more tip: the internet is full of DIY videos for BRIMNES—it’s really fun if you approach it the right way. 😉
Good luck!
