I have decided to repaint my Malm furniture from IKEA because I no longer like the white finish. Could someone please explain in detail the best way to proceed to achieve a good, even result? I am especially interested in the preparation steps, which types of paint or finishes are suitable, and if there are any special techniques for the surface. I would also appreciate advice on whether I should disassemble the furniture or if it can be painted as a whole. Thanks in advance!

Before painting, you should thoroughly clean the furniture and then lightly sand it. For Malm furniture, I recommend using acrylic or furniture paint. You can paint the pieces fully, but disassembling them is helpful for hard-to-reach areas.

Hello, I would like to add: The surface of Malm furniture is usually coated with melamine resin, which requires light sanding before paint can adhere properly. Use fine sandpaper, around grit 240. Cleaning afterward is important, preferably with a slightly damp cloth and alcohol to remove any grease residues. A primer is often recommended, especially if you are changing from white to another color. This helps the paint to last better and longer.

Wow, that sounds exciting! 🙂 I painted my Malm dresser last autumn, and one thing I definitely recommend is to thoroughly clean the entire surface and disassemble the furniture, so you can reach every part! After that, I applied a spray primer, which is excellent for creating a smooth base. Then I worked with acrylic paint in several thin layers. It was quite a lot of effort, but the result turned out fantastic!

If you use a good primer, you can work with regular acrylic or furniture lacquer in matte or gloss finish. Important: Dust off thoroughly after sanding, otherwise you will see uneven spots.

Exactly! 🙂 I think painting Malm furniture is definitely worth it because it looks like new designer pieces afterward. One more tip: patience is a great friend – better to apply several thin coats and let them dry well in between. Nothing is more annoying than thick paint bubbles!
