SAU48Hello everyone,
I am planning to customize my IKEA Besta furniture, especially by replacing the fronts. The standard IKEA fronts are functional but often not particularly high-quality or unique. Therefore, I am looking for recommended alternative front materials that work well for Besta, both in terms of installation and appearance as well as durability. It would be great if you could suggest materials that are easy to work with, have a long lifespan, and are visually appealing. I am also very interested in experiences with combinations such as real wood veneer, painted MDF, or other innovative surface finishes.
So, which front materials would you recommend as alternatives to the standard IKEA Besta fronts? Are there any reliable sources or ready-made solutions that have proven effective? Thanks in advance for your help!

Basically, several materials are suitable for renewing BESTA fronts, each meeting different requirements:
- MDF panels with paint (RAL or NCS): Very stable surface, which can be painted in matte or high-gloss finishes. Advantage: good durability, wide color range.
- Real wood veneers on MDF or plywood: Visually very appealing and unique. Furniture appears more high-quality, but the surface is more sensitive to moisture.
- HPL (High Pressure Laminate): Resistant to scratches and moisture, often used in commercial furnishings. However, the feel can seem somewhat cold.
- Glass fronts (frosted or painted): Very modern and easy to clean. Installation requires precise adjustment of the fittings.
Source: For most materials, it is advisable to use specialty timber merchants or specialized manufacturers offering cut-to-size and edge processing. There are also online shops that offer precisely fitting fronts specifically for BESTA.
It is important to check the compatibility of the drilling holes so that the fittings can be reused or installed with adapters.

While HPL is durable, the appearance at visible edges and corners often suffers from chipping or delamination – which becomes noticeable quickly under normal residential use.

Painted MDF is definitely the best alternative. That’s not always clear-cut. Painted MDF (especially cheaper options) can also chip or yellow under heavy use due to poor painting quality. Additionally, many paints are neither odorless nor environmentally friendly.
I personally find real wood veneers to look the most premium, but that’s true: they require more maintenance and damage is very visible.
Are there any experiences with so-called PET foil fronts for BESTA? These are supposed to be more scratch-resistant than paint and still affordable – does anyone have reliable feedback on that?

Are there any experiences with so-called PET film fronts for BESTA? They are said to be more scratch-resistant than paint and still affordable – does anyone have reliable practical experience? This is an interesting addition, thanks! I’ve actually read about PET-coated fronts that seem to be well-tolerated and offer a protective layer thanks to the film application. They are also supposed to be more water-repellent than pure painted surfaces. However, I’m unsure about their durability in everyday use. How does this film hold up against sharp objects, for example? And what about repair options if a corner gets damaged?
I’m also curious whether these films adhere to standard MDF or even particleboard, and how the adhesive process works for self-assembly.
