Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Which casters are suitable for making an Ikea Besta shelving unit flexible and mobile?

I would like to modify the unit so that I can easily move it when needed without having to fully disassemble it. It’s important to me that the casters are sturdy enough to support the weight of a fully loaded Besta, but at the same time not too bulky or coarse in appearance. Does anyone have experience with which types of casters work well (e.g., with brakes, ball bearing, material), or maybe even specific casters from furniture or hardware stores that fit nicely?

I would also appreciate tips on installation and any potential pitfalls to watch out for when retrofitting. Thanks in advance!

Look for sturdy swivel casters with rubber coating. Ideally, choose ones with a locking brake to ensure the shelf stays securely in place. Attach the casters at the corners or on the strongest load-bearing points.

Additionally, for the Ikea Besta shelving unit, I recommend casters with a diameter of at least 50 mm (2 inches) and a load capacity of at least 30 kg (66 lbs) per caster to ensure safety when fully loaded. Ball-bearing casters also roll more smoothly and last longer. In terms of materials, polyurethane or rubber treads are a good choice because they protect the floor and roll quietly.

The attachment should be secured with sufficiently large screws and, if necessary, additional metal plates to guarantee stability. When fitting casters yourself, stability can be compromised if the screws are not tightened properly or if the material at the mounting point is not strong enough.

Hey, that’s the dream of many Besta fans! 😄 My tip: look for caster wheels with integrated brakes, so you can lock the shelf in place when you don’t want to move it, and easily roll it when needed. I personally chose ones with rubber wheels because they are quiet and protect the floor.

A little extra hack: to be on the safe side, attach small felt pads inside on the surface of the wheels’ mounts to protect your floors perfectly. It works great and makes the whole process almost effortless.

That sounds reasonable, especially to ensure safety. I know the issue that some casters can be too wobbly when the Besta is fully loaded or even leave marks on the floor.

Maybe it would also be helpful to know how others have distributed the weight or if they reinforced the shelf to support the casters better? It would be great if someone with practical experience could share how well the mobility actually works and which casters are particularly durable.
