Hello everyone,

I have a rather annoying problem with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. Whenever I try to move or shift the module, it tends to get stuck or jammed. It feels as if the individual parts no longer fit properly on the floor beneath or on the caster wheels – the whole thing becomes unstable and is difficult to move without risking damage. Has anyone else experienced something similar or knows what might be causing this? I assembled the shelf just over a year ago, and it stands on a relatively smooth laminate floor. I would really appreciate any tips on how to fix or at least reduce this jamming issue. Thanks in advance!

This is actually a very common observation with KALLAX shelving units, especially when placed on hard floors like laminate. The reason is usually related to the construction and slight unevenness between the floor, the bottom of the shelf, and any attached feet or casters.

I recommend first checking all fastening points (such as screws, nuts, and wall plugs) of the module carefully. Even a slightly loose connection can prevent forces from distributing evenly, which may cause twisting. Also, make sure that all casters are aligned perfectly parallel – it often happens that one caster is mounted just a bit skewed, causing the module to twist when moved.

Another tip is to place a thin, non-slip mat under the shelving unit. This helps ensure smooth movement and reduces twisting. It can also help to lubricate the casters to allow for easier rolling.

It is also important to consider whether you move the module alone or with assistance. Sometimes applying force unevenly on one side leads to the twisting issue. How much weight do you typically store in the module? Heavy loads can significantly affect stability.

If you like, please share how the shelf is currently set up (with feet, casters, or if it is fixed to the wall), so I can offer more targeted advice.

That sounds really frustrating, I completely understand your annoyance! I had a similar experience when I tried to move the KALLAX shelf, and it kept getting stuck as if the frame was slightly deforming while moving. I had hoped it was just the laminate flooring causing it since that can sometimes be a bit uneven.

That really helped me – one of those thin but grippy anti-slip pads from the hardware store. It made moving the shelf much easier, without feeling like it was catching or skewing.

Sometimes it’s also a combination of weight and floor type, so maybe try making the unit a bit lighter if you plan to move it frequently?

I don’t want to worry you, but if the shelf isn’t secured, that skewing can cause damage to the frame if you apply too much force. But I’m sure a workable solution can be found here! 🙂

First, check that all rollers are securely mounted and aligned straight. If a roller is tilted, it can easily cause jamming. Then: place the shelving unit on a level surface and avoid pinching against walls or furniture that could restrict movement.

This is actually a very common observation with KALLAX shelves... irregularities in levelness between the floor, the underside of the shelf, and possibly installed feet or casters.

I wonder if the issue might also be related to the material itself. KALLAX is made from pressed wood composite. Manufacturing tolerances sometimes allow for variations that can lead to misalignment.

Furthermore, I would doubt that simply using a thin mat will always solve the problem. If the issue is caused by warped panels, the only solution might be a modification, such as adding extra braces or even replacing the feet with new ones that have rubber buffers to compensate for unevenness.

One should be cautious about the general recommendation of using a non-slip mat, as this can increase rolling resistance and actually make moving the unit more difficult.

It would be interesting to know the exact assembly of the shelf and whether the casters are original or added later.

Thanks in advance for all the detailed answers!

I’ll start by explaining how my shelf is set up: I have the small 4x4 KALLAX unit with the original casters that IKEA provides. The shelf stands on a very level laminate floor, which has no noticeable unevenness.

Weight: It mostly contains books, which already put a significant load on the unit. Also, the shelf is freestanding, not screwed to or secured against the wall.

Regarding the twisting issue, it mostly happens when I grab the shelf on one corner and try to slide it. Then it feels like the shelf slightly twists and jams, and the casters don’t turn or roll properly anymore. I have also checked the screws, and they all seem tight.

That is definitely a factor for me, since I only store books in the lower half of the unit while the upper half is empty.

Would it help to secure the shelf to the wall somehow, or could that even make the twisting problem worse?
