Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to best use the IKEA Platsa system for storing sports equipment. My main focus is on a solution that is both flexible and secure, able to accommodate both small and larger items while also looking neat.

The main challenge I see is that sports equipment varies greatly—from yoga mats, dumbbells, and jump ropes to basketballs or bicycle helmets. I would like to get an overview of which combinations of Platsa components (shelves, drawers, compartments) work best, and whether the system can be adapted with custom modifications or accessories to optimally store sports gear.

Perhaps some of you already have experience with Platsa in this context? How did you solve it, especially when space is tight but you still want everything to be quickly accessible? Are there any special tips regarding stability, since some equipment can be quite heavy or bulky?

I look forward to your opinions and advice!

That’s a really good question, especially since sports gear can often create such a mess—I totally get that.

I’ve also tried modifying the PLATSA system for climbing gear and found that its modularity is super practical.

What I especially appreciate is being able to combine open shelves with doors so that important items are easy to grab while other things stay neatly hidden.

Sometimes I worry about the load capacity, for example when storing heavy weights or helmets. I reinforced the shelves with extra metal brackets to prevent sagging.

One more tip: for long items like yoga mats or tennis rackets, I left some tall open compartments, which makes everything much clearer. But figuring out how to customize it individually was a challenge, so I’d definitely recommend starting with sketches or measurements before assembling.

I’d also be interested to know if anyone has created specific PLATSA accessories or modifications for sports equipment.

PLATSA is versatile:

- Open compartments for frequently used small items
- Drawers for gloves, tapes, etc.
- Compartments with doors to protect equipment from dust
- Shelves with metal reinforcement for heavy tools

Upright compartments are suitable for mats, flat ones for dumbbells.

Use accessories from IKEA or your own inserts.

This combination of open and closed compartments is indeed a key feature of the PLATSA system, designed to optimize organization and accessibility.

Regarding stability: According to IKEA’s specifications, the maximum load capacity per shelf is about 13 kilograms (28.7 pounds), depending on the assembly. For heavier sports equipment, it is advisable to add extra reinforcements such as metal brackets or use base compartments.

When handling bulky equipment, adjustable shelves are practical so you can customize the height of each compartment. Taller items like ski poles or cycling gear can be stored upright in vertically configured compartments.

Another tip: Using boxes or storage baskets made of plastic or wood helps organize smaller accessories and also contributes to overall stability.

This approach also makes it easier to manage awkward shapes and sizes without wasting storage space.

Overall, PLATSA is versatile but requires planning based on the dimensions and weights of your sports equipment.

Hope this helps.
