Hello everyone, I recently got a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and have already noticed that the smooth surfaces and open compartments collect a lot of dust. My question is: What effective methods do you know to keep the KALLAX unit as dust-free as possible without having to clean it constantly with a lot of effort? I’m also interested in sustainable cleaning products or helpful little tips for daily maintenance. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello sanko, I’m happy to provide you with a brief guide for effectively cleaning your KALLAX:
1. Remove dust using a dry microfiber cloth to avoid scratches.
2. For tougher dirt, use a damp cloth with a mild cleaning agent.
3. You can clean the interior sides of the compartments well with a vacuum cleaner attachment.
4. To prevent dust buildup, use bookends or boxes that help reduce dust accumulation.
A common mistake is rubbing too hard, which wears down the surface faster.

I would like to delve a bit deeper into the topic, as KALLAX, due to its open design, does tend to collect dust. In addition to regular cleaning, I recommend the following approach:
1. Use breathable dust covers or fabric storage boxes for frequently used compartments. This significantly reduces dust buildup.
2. For surface care, an anti-static spray is suitable as it reduces the electrostatic attraction of dust particles. However, be careful: always check for compatibility with melamine and lacquered surfaces.
3. Vacuuming with a soft brush attachment removes dust from hard-to-reach areas.
I’m interested in how noticeable the dust is for you. Do you mainly use your KALLAX open or with boxes? This greatly affects the best care approach.

I'm curious, how visible is the dust in your case? Do you mainly use your KALLAX open or with boxes?Good question! I mostly use the shelf open and place some decorative items inside, but boxes are hardly used at the moment. Dust becomes quite noticeable after a few days, especially on the white painted surface and in the corners of the compartments.
