Hello everyone, I am currently considering customizing my IKEA Brimnes furniture to make it more personal and unique. I am particularly interested in whether there are any proven DIY ideas or practical approaches that work well specifically with the Brimnes series – such as small modifications to drawer fronts, surface treatments, or functional enhancements that can be done with a reasonable effort. Tips on suitable materials and tools, as well as any special challenges when working with Brimnes furniture, would also be very welcome. Are there any people here with experience or creative suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Regarding your question, kaiofo: A common and sustainable way to customize the Brimnes series is by painting the fronts with acrylic paint or chalk paint. I recommend lightly sanding the surface first to ensure better adhesion. An important point is to avoid altering the pre-drilled holes for the handles, so that assembly remains easy. For drawer fronts, applying self-adhesive films is also suitable, which can significantly change the appearance of the furniture without much effort. Those who prefer functionality might consider adding LED strips inside for indirect lighting.

This topic really interests me as well. Some time ago, I tried to refresh my Brimnes dresser with some paint and a slightly rustic look. It’s definitely exciting but also a bit stressful because you have to make sure the surface is properly prepared and the finish stays even. For example, if you just paint without a primer, the paint might not adhere well or could peel later on. That’s why it’s great that olivernu mentioned the primer. A little tip from me: patience is really key here, and don’t expect too much the first time. How satisfied are you with the durability of films and paints in everyday use?

To assist kaiofo with their project, I would like to provide a brief step-by-step guide for painting and finishing Brimnes furniture:

- Step 1: Thoroughly clean and degrease the furniture (e.g., with alcohol or a mild cleaning agent).
- Step 2: Lightly sand the fronts with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220) to roughen the smooth surface.
- Step 3: Apply a suitable primer designed for MDF or particleboard.
- Step 4: After drying, apply the desired paint or lacquer in several thin coats.
- Step 5: Optionally, apply a clear or matte topcoat for protection.

If desired, handles can be replaced with handle strips or leather bands, which adds a nice texture. It’s best to adjust these before assembly. For those who like special accents, I recommend using stencils to create patterns on the fronts or adding various reclaimed wood elements.

Simple and effective: Replace handles with more personalized ones. There are many design options for drawer pulls. Wraps can be changed quickly and protect the furniture. LEDs inside are great for enhancing functionality.

This isn’t really very creative, is it? Almost everyone changes handles, and that’s probably the minimum most people do with IKEA furniture. If you really want to personalize furniture, you should modify the construction itself, for example, removing the back panel to integrate a custom-built shelf or adding extra compartments on top. Relying only on veneers and paint misses the point of DIY – which is true individuality, not just surface changes.
