Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount a Billy shelf on a concrete wall, but I want to be sure that I use the right screws. The shelf will be quite heavily loaded and should remain securely fixed in the long term.

My specific question is: What type of screws are best suited for mounting a Billy shelf on a wall? Should I pay attention to specific screw types, such as anchor screws with expansion anchors, or are simple wall plugs and wood screws sufficient? I would also appreciate advice on the appropriate length and diameter of the screws as well as the correct wall plugs, especially considering the maximum load capacity.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi,

for a Billy shelf on a concrete wall, I recommend standard expansion anchors with suitable wood screws. Screw diameter about 6 mm (1/4 inch), length around 60-80 mm (2.5-3 inches) to ensure the screw grips well in the anchor and goes deep into the masonry. Important: choose anchors that match the screws and drill the hole properly before screwing.

This is basically good advice, but since the Billy shelf often carries heavier loads, it’s important to pay closer attention to the details.

First, regarding the choice of anchors: For concrete walls, high-quality nylon expansion anchors or, even better, universal anchors with metal collars are suitable, as they reliably hold in solid concrete. Cheap anchors made entirely of plastic can expand or break under load.

About screws: The screws should have a diameter of at least 6 mm (1/4 inch), or 8 mm (5/16 inch) depending on the shelf size and load. It is important that the screws themselves are high quality and galvanized to prevent rust over time. The length should be chosen so that the screw penetrates at least 50 mm (2 inches) into the masonry. For a 10 mm (3/8 inch) anchor size, for example, 6x80 mm (1/4 x 3 1/8 inch) screws are suitable—the length will vary depending on wall thickness and shelf construction.

A quick rule of thumb: For a shelf with shelves and books, at least two anchors should be used per fixing point to distribute the weight well.

Regarding installation: Pre-drilling with the correct drill bit (a masonry bit matching the anchor size) is mandatory, preferable to impact drilling. When screwing in, proceed slowly and without too much force, otherwise the anchor might spin or break.

If possible, check whether the fixing points are in solid concrete rather than mortar joints to maximize load capacity.

What is your exact wall thickness or type? Is it solid concrete or more like aerated concrete? That makes a difference in anchor selection.

Thanks, that’s a helpful tip. My wall is a fairly solid, load-bearing concrete wall, probably solid concrete. There should be hardly any mortar or cavities.

Important details regarding wall plugs and screws

That helps a lot, as I wasn’t sure until now whether I could use simple 5mm (0.2 inch) wall plugs and short screws, for example. I also wanted to ask: Are there significant advantages in terms of durability and load-bearing capacity when choosing between universal wall plugs, expansion plugs, or similar types?

And one more question: What about impact anchors or chemical anchors – does that make sense for a Billy-style shelf, or would that be overkill?

Looking forward to your opinions!

Hello Pauge,

I would like to address your question in a structured way to help you make a well-informed decision:

1. Types of anchors:
- Expansion anchors: A classic choice; suitable for solid walls like concrete, affordable and easy to use. Adequate for average loads.
- Universal anchors: Often a bit stronger because they have external ribs for better grip and an internal expansion function, especially practical if you want extra security.
- Hammer anchors: These metal anchors are designed for very heavy loads but are more complicated to install and usually oversized for furniture like Billy shelves.
- Chemical anchors: Provide very high load capacity, used for unreliable masonry; however, they are complex and expensive, rarely necessary in solid concrete.

2. Screws:
- Using galvanized or preferably stainless steel screws increases durability. A diameter of 6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 inches) is ideal.
- The length should be chosen so that the screw penetrates at least 5 cm (2 inches) into the anchor and the wall.

3. Installation tips:
- Pre-drill with the appropriate drill bit and make sure to measure the drilling depth.
- Insert the anchor, then screw in slowly and carefully.
- Mounting points should preferably be in solid concrete, which you have already confirmed.

Conclusion: For a Billy shelf in a solid concrete wall, high-quality nylon expansion or universal anchors with galvanized screws sized 6x80 mm (0.24x3.15 inches) are a safe choice. Hammer anchors or chemical anchors are generally not necessary unless the shelf will be subjected to extreme loads.

If you want more details, such as load capacity per anchor or the number of mounting points, feel free to ask.
