Hello everyone, I recently got some IKEA Malm furniture for my small apartment, but I want to use it efficiently and keep it as neat as possible. Tidying up and organizing can be especially challenging in small spaces since storage and surface area are limited.

My question is: What methods or smart tips do you have for organizing Malm furniture so that it doesn’t overcrowd the room while making effective use of the storage space?

I’m particularly thinking about storage solutions for the drawers or cabinets, but also how to keep surfaces clear without sacrificing functionality.

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I use simple drawer organizers to arrange space in Malm dressers. This keeps everything separated and tidy. Keeping surfaces clear means for me: minimal decorations, only the essentials on top.

I am a bit skeptical about that – what exactly does "minimal decoration" mean, and who defines it? In small rooms, even a small plant or a decorative item can add atmosphere. The balance between tidiness and coziness should not come at the expense of a homely feel.

Also, I wonder if the focus should be solely on organization, or whether furniture pieces themselves can be used multifunctionally. Are there any special additions or practical hacks for Malm?

Thanks for the point! That’s exactly what I’m trying to achieve. I don’t want a sterile look, but in small rooms, too much simply feels cluttered very quickly.

Regarding multifunctional use: I’ve been thinking about how I can use, for example, the top of the dresser in the bedroom not only as a surface but also as a small minibar or workspace—ideally without fully covering it.

Does anyone have ideas on how to extend or complement the Malm so that it can truly serve multiple functions?

A proven tip is to use transparent boxes or modular storage systems in the Malm drawers to clearly separate different items. This helps prevent clutter and allows for targeted storage.

I also recommend organizing the furniture surfaces with narrow trays or small shelves. This creates a certain order without limiting their usability.

For multifunctional use, you can arrange the surface with organizer systems or small removable inserts – this way, the area remains flexible for different purposes.

It is also possible to attach hooks to the side of the Malm, provided the material allows it, for example, for small bags or keys. This way, otherwise unused spaces are utilized effectively.
