Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific issue with my Billy shelves from IKEA, namely stubborn stains that won’t come off despite multiple attempts to clean them. The shelves are made of the typical melamine-coated wood-based material, and the stains sometimes look like burned-in drink rings or somewhat oily dirt that seems to have penetrated deep into the surface.

Does anyone have experience with effectively removing such stains without damaging the surface? I’m hesitant to use harsh cleaners because I want to preserve the appearance of the shelves.

Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

Hey GIDAN1, that sounds frustrating, but there are solutions! :-)

I’ve treated my own BILLY shelves several times using simple household items and was really surprised at how well it worked. Try vinegar water (diluted about 1:1 with water) on a soft cloth and gently wipe – this often removes dirt very effectively. But be careful not to make it too wet!

If the stain is still there, a baking soda paste (mix baking soda with a little water) works as a mild abrasive paste.

That’s great if it works because then you don’t need any harsh cleaners! Good luck, and let us know how it went! 🙂

Try vinegar water. If it doesn’t help, use a baking soda paste and gently rub.

Exactly! And if you happen to have some lemon on hand, you can also refresh the scent nicely. 😉

I find that gentle care is best for BILLY shelves, since the material isn’t as durable as solid wood. Be careful, and the shelves will stay looking like new for a long time!

Hello GIDAN1,

to fully address your issue with stubborn dirt on BILLY shelves, I would like to explain the material and possible cleaning methods in more detail.

The shelves are usually made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating. This surface is relatively resistant to scratches and moisture but less tolerant of strong solvents or abrasive cleaners with coarse grains.

My recommendation:

1. Start with mild cleaning agents, such as dish soap in warm water.
2. For more ingrained dirt, you can apply a paste made of baking soda and water, but very gently and preferably spot-wise.
3. Avoid abrasive sponges or steel wool, as they can scratch the surface.
4. If the stains come from oils or dried liquids, using an isopropanol-based cleaner sparingly may help, but be sure to test it on an inconspicuous area first.

What exactly does the dirt look like in your case? Are the stains superficial or does the dirt seem to have penetrated the structure? Were there possibly any liquids left on the surface for an extended period?

A precise description will help find the best approach.

Thank you for the detailed answer, Filippo! Most of the stains are either baked in or quite deep, like the edges left by hot drinks or somewhat stubborn dirt, especially visible on the shelves.

They don’t seem to be just surface dirt, since regular wiping with a microfiber cloth and soapy water is not enough. They are not sticky or liquid, rather matte, dark spots that I can’t remove even when using more cleaning agents.

So far, I haven’t tried isopropanol or vinegar, but I would like to address this carefully without causing the surface to become dull or stained.
