I would like to start a topic that will surely interest many Ikea Besta owners: Which colors are especially suitable for painting Ikea Besta fronts?
Since Besta fronts are often made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or have a foil coating, the question arises about the right choice of paint and surface preparation to achieve a durable and visually appealing result.
Personally, I tend to prefer matte tones, but I would also like to know whether special lacquers, enamel paints, or even chalk paints are advisable, which colors provide good coverage, and whether certain shades work better due to the surface texture or material properties.
Who has experience, tips, or tricks, perhaps also regarding color combinations for Besta shelves? I would appreciate a lively exchange here so that I and others can make a well-informed decision.

This is a great topic that I often think about myself, as I frequently repaint furniture.
In my experience, paints with a matte finish deliver the best results because small imperfections or flaws on the fronts are less noticeable. However, I have had adhesion problems with foil fronts in the past. Therefore, I strongly recommend using a primer or adhesion promoter before painting.
Regarding the color range, I prefer muted tones like a warm gray or a soft blue, as they look both elegant and modern.
Have you already decided on a specific type of paint? This makes a big difference in how the paint behaves on the surface.

There are some important technical aspects to consider when choosing colors for Ikea Besta fronts, which are often overlooked:
- Most Besta fronts have either a melamine or foil coating. These surfaces are very smooth and have low absorbency, making it difficult for paint to adhere properly.
- For a durable bond, it is advisable to use a special primer designed for plastics or coated surfaces.
- Water-based acrylic paints are preferred because they are less aggressive and help prevent cracking.
- In terms of color, matte and satin finishes prove to be the most resistant to wear and tear.
Personally, I tend to favor neutral shades such as stone gray, anthracite, or subtle white, as they are timeless and fit well with various interior styles.
Without proper preparation, any paint can quickly chip or become uneven; this seems to me to be the critical point.

Which paints are particularly suitable for painting Ikea Besta fronts? For me, besides the paint itself, small tricks like intermediate sanding and using suitable glazes are important, especially if you want to emphasize the wood grain a bit.
Regarding the paint: I would choose something not too light because scratches show up easily. Darker shades are easier to maintain, unless you have a lot of fingerprints nearby.
